The Witch’s Desk

I receive questions on an almost daily basis, in emails, through Facebook, the form at my website, and through other Pagan social sites.  I try to answer as many as I can, but I’ve realized that I’m running a losing race at this.  I’ve chosen a few questions that have struck me either with a sense of urgency, or maybe even a sense of alarm (like, wouldn’t the answer to this one be obvious!); and I’ve chosen a couple I want to include in this blog; one fits the sense of urgency, and the other one a sense of alarm.  These questions are going to be posted exactly as I received them, unedited:

1.  can you mix goofer dust into a run drink to make same one sick or maybe wi same cake

No!…no, no, and no!!  Goofer dust is not edible and is not safe to consume.  The main components in the Goofer Dust that I make myself are cemetery dirt, sulpher (which can be purchased at a green house), and crushed snake sheds.  Anyone who doubts the effects of ‘magick’ would soon have their doubts put to rest if they got a chance to watch what happens to someone when Goofer Dust is used against them.  I know– I’ve seen it.  If you’re going to use this type of magick, use it as it was meant to be used– in the form of spells and mojo; just do not ever administer a poisonous or otherwise unsafe ingredient to someone through food or drink.

Better alternatives:  If you are in an abusive situation– go to the authorities or a local women’s shelter for help and assistance.  If you’re with someone you can’t stand– leave them.  If you’re angry with a boyfriend because he’s cheated on you– dump him and consider yourself lucky to have seen the light and dodged the bullet.

2.  Hello! I had some questions about the proper use of stones. Long story short, I have a roommate who isn’t the biggest fan of my life style. I’m very new to Wicca and I’m not sure how to feel about her recent actions. I recently got a kyanite stone for the house and set it up on a bookshelf with a few other of my stones to help the health of our home. She didn’t seem to really care all that much but I woke up this morning and she had knitted a gross around my kyanite stone. I’m hoping this is her way of showing she cares but I also don’t wan’t to interfere with the stones energy. If this impacts it at all will you let me know? Thank you so much!

Her recent actions, even if good intentions were meant (and I’m not so sure they were), to touch something sacred and personal that was yours, is very disrespectful.  This would not be my favorite kind of roommate.  Have a talk with her; being open and honest is the best approach.  My ire is rankled a bit by this, so I’m afraid I’d tell her in no uncertain terms to keep her cotton pickin’ fingers off my stuff– and I don’t care if this is magickal items or mundane things (this is one of my personal pet peeves).  At least emphasize that she should not tamper with your altar, candles, stones, etc., as she’s messing with energy that she doesn’t understand.

Another way of looking at this:  She is Christian, I’m assuming, and she might be frightened of Paganism or any other spiritual path she’s been taught to fear.  Discuss the use of stones with her, as well as Wicca and the fact that this is an earth-based religion similar in many ways to American Native Shamanism, that there is no devil worship, that this is simply a god and goddess inspired spiritual path and the majority of people who follow it have good intentions, pure hearts.  You have to try and reassure her that it is not harmful and there’s nothing to be afraid of– which might be a tall order, easier said than done.

3.  Dear Amythyst Raine-Hatayama, I would like to know if I could and/or should desire a succubus for a Lover? Is this possible? I have read articles stating it could be done. Although my better judgement thinks a supernatural force can not be controlled for my use and may lose in the long run. Lost in time

Quite frankly, I don’t know, and I haven’t thought about it.  D.J. Conway touched on the subject of “astral lovers” in one of her books (can’t remember which one).  Personally, I find real-life relationships the most challenging and the most rewarding.  I’ll leave astral lovers of any kind for someone else to experiment with.

If I were you, I’d go with your better judgment.

4.  Hi, I came across your profile through an online page, where you’ve told that you practise witch stuff and you’re a good soul. I’m interested in being a witch, a good one and I was hoping if you could help me out, tell me your experience, how does it feel, can you still be connected to your god and stuff. I don’t know if its okay to approach you this way, but if you dont mind, I need advices. 🙂

I wish I had the time and energy to type out the oodles and oodles of experiences and advice you’re wanting to hear, but I just don’t.  I will suggest that you 1) make use of this blog; its filled with my personal experiences at practicing witchcraft, as well as information on this topic; 2) You’ll also find information along this bent in my book, “The Gray Witch’s Grimoire”.

(I’m a good soul?)…I don’t believe I’ve ever said that of myself, but hopefully, I am.
