The Witch’s Desk: A Reader’s Dream

As I’ve noted before, I receive emails from readers all over the world on a variety of subjects (both occult and personal!).  This week, at The Witch’s Desk, I’m going to take the time to answer one of these emails.  The following submission is going to be printed as received, with no editing, other than what’s necessary to maintain the anonymity of the individual who submitted the question.

____________________

1)  Hey so lately I have just been drawn to desiring to be a witch I honestly can’t explain why. I am emailing you to see if when I tell you my experiences you will be able the help me understand everything that’s happened. okay so when I was little for around a 6 month period of time I have these horrifying dreams about an evil witch who would chase me and take over my family’s body’s . This caused me to wake up in the night screaming crying terrified for my life? Before I went to sleep I heard voices calling my name. One night when I woke up in the night I saw an outline of a women holding a laundry basket standing half way up my stairs looking at me. When I was walking back from school once in the same spot I stopped in the dream a car pulled out in which a women who look almost paralyzed and like the witch in my dreams and was staring at me doing an evil smile waving slowly after I stopped having these dreams everything stopped all these weird accuracies . But lately I feel like I can intimidate people with my eyes and the sun is somehow if I’m in a room full of people the sun will shine on me through the window and I will have to move seats but then the sun goes away and little things like that have started happening ? Have you got any explanation thank you for reading this email?

There so many layers to your letter and your experiences.  First, I want to be clear that I normally don’t do dream interpretation, nor do I ever refer to books when it comes to this.  I believe that images and connections in dreams are so personal and personally tailored that it would be impossible to be accurate using a book to tell you what an image means. As an example, someone who doesn’t like snakes may view them as evil and bad omens when they show up in a dream, but someone who has a spiritual connection with this animal would view it as the Goddess, wisdom, positive sexual energy– good things!  Do you see what I’m saying?  I’m probably going out on a limb here, but I want to address your dream first:

Being chased in a dream is really quite common.  When this has happened to me, I’ve always noticed that what was chasing me in the dream really had more to do with the pressures and stresses that I was dealing with in my waking life than it did with the entity in the dream.  What was chasing me was more of a manifestation of all that stress.  You said this happened to you for a 6 month period of time as a child.  I’m guessing that there were things going on in your life, or with your family at that time, that was troubling or confusing to you (the child), and this was your way of playing out the confusion and dealing with the stress.

The fact that the Evil Witch in your dream possessed the bodies of your family members could be that it was their actions, their situation, their behavior, that was causing you distress at that time.

I know this explanation is more down to earth and mundane than you were expecting, but it’s really just common sense.  Our everyday mundane life is what takes center stage in most of our dreams– yes, there are people who have prophetic dreams, visits from angels or spirits or spirit guides, but to tell you the truth 99% of our dreams are just everyday ordinary life manifesting in our sub-conscious.

The voices you heard calling your name before you fell asleep:  mundane explanation– I remember falling asleep in the house as a small child, listening to the conversations and murmurs of the adults in the next room.  It was actually comforting, and as I fell asleep, the sounds of their voices would weave and tangle through my sub-conscious, creating images and stories, and…dreams.  A more “magickal” or “spiritual” explanation– I have often experienced hearing my grandmother’s voice calling my name, and this has usually happened just as I was drifting off to sleep, when I was “between the worlds”, neither awake, nor asleep.  I believe that it was her spirit communicating with me, just letting me know that she was near by.

The woman with the laundry basket…most likely a spirit connected to the house, a previous occupant no doubt.

The woman in the car…I really don’t have an explanation for this aspect of your dream, though I too have had the same character show up in more than one dream.  I believe that, if it is not a Spirit Guide (and you’ll know this, at least I do, and it will be an enlightening “aha” moment, a positive experience), it is another aspect of your mundane brain creating dreams in your sub-conscious.

Why would you want to intimidate people with your eyes?  And, by the way, lots of people have this ability.  It’s not magickal or mysterious.  It’s even found in the animal kingdom.  There are certain animals that view direct eye contact as a threat– gorillas, canines, etc.

And last , but not least…the Sun.  It seems, dear, that my explanation for this is going to be more along a mundane everyday viewpoint.  I would say that, for some reason, you are seeking the shadows.  My advice– look for the positive aspects in life, positive connections with people.  Instead of seeking the shadows, glory in the light.

The Reality of Magick

A Question I received yesterday:

[sic] I I really need some help I really what you to make this boy have all the same classes with me and like me please I’ll. Doing anything please and I need it done today thx

____________________

Oh my goodness, Sweetheart, real magick doesn’t work this way.  Where do I start?

First, You can’t “make” anyone like you.  Even though there are spells out there, love spells, that can draw someone to you (and a few darker forms of magick to bind someone to you); this kind of magick is always fraught with karmic repercussions– you think you want something, but what you get might be something totally unexpected and unsatisfactory.  And these kinds of spells are very hard, if not impossible, to reverse.  And anyway, you don’t want a young man to ‘like’ you just because you’ve used magick on him.  You want a young man to like you because he’s drawn to you naturally in some way.

Second, I know of no magick spell to insure that you will be in the same place at the same time, hour after hour, day after day, with another human being– as in ‘all the same classes’.  Real magick doesn’t work the way you’ve seen in the movies.  1) it works in it’s own time-frame (sometimes with moon cycles) 2) it does not offer instant gratification and results  3) sometimes what we want isn’t always good for us, and there is a higher power (whether you call it God, Goddess, The All, or whatever), and this higher power has a clearer view of our destiny and what’s best for us, and even our most magickal endeavors will not manifest.

“I need it done today…”  The best magick is timed correctly with magickal correspondences– the moon phase, planetary hours, different days of the week for different energy and magick, etc. etc.  And, just to emphasize it once more, magick works with the laws of physics, magick moves energy in a natural way for beneficial change.  You can’t snap your fingers and produce instant results.

If you like this young man, and you would like to become friends, you’ll get a lot farther by 1) introducing yourself and starting a conversation  2) making a point to say hello when the circumstance presents itself  3) maybe finding out what kinds of extracurricular activities he’s interested in and then only if you’re interested in the same things, join the club or group.

Bright Blessings,
Amythyst

PS–

“I’ll do anything”…Oh, my.  This made me cringe.  There’s a few things you should *Never* do when it comes to love and relationships.

You should never compromise your principals.

In the course of a relationship, you should never lose your own identity. (Maintain a healthy ego and self-image; be proud of your strengths, your personality, your work, your achievements, your talents.)

You should never become involved in a relationship that will put you in the position of ‘victim’.

When you love someone, it’s natural (and usually positive and unselfish) to put them first, but don’t put someone else’s desires, wishes, plans, and expectations before your own physical, mental, and spiritual well being.

7 Magickal Questions

33
How did you “discover” Wicca/Witchcraft/Neo-Paganism?

I’m  not so sure that I discovered Witchcraft, it’s more like Witchcraft discovered me.

I’m sure most people who’ve known me for any length of time have heard the story of the first spell I cast, as a teen-ager, in the basement of my Grandmother’s house.  The fact that, somehow– by instinct or higher power, or both– I managed to get so many of the magickal correspondences right is somewhat of a marvel.  Actually, the idea that a teen-ager living in South Dakota in the 70s, who had never been exposed to witchcraft, would even think of such a thing in the first place gives pause for thought.

Do you grow herbs?

Yes– mostly in the garden.  I tend to have a very black thumb when it comes to house plants.  I’m not sure if their untimely demise is totally dependent on my lack of indoor gardening skills, or my very dark very plant unfriendly house.

Are you “in the broom closet”?  If not, share your coming out experience.

I don’t think I’ve ever been in the broom closet.  I’m too open an individual, the closet would have been too confining and stuffy for me.  The phrase “My Life is an Open Book”– I think it was written for me.

I am what I am.  It is what it is.

What tradition do you follow, if any?

I’m eclectic– a mixture of practices.

Actually, over the years, I’ve developed a new religion, a new practice, or spiritual path, if you will.  I dubbed it “Gray Magerium”.  It’s a combination of Wicca, Green Witchcraft, and Hoodoo.  (I feel another book coming on.)

For more information on “Gray Magerium”, follow this link: My Path/About Me

Do you consider yourself a Witch, Wiccan or Pagan (or maybe something else)?

Witch…most definitely.  The word is all-encompassing.

I also love the sound of Hag, Crone, Wise-Woman, Priestess, and Conjure Woman.

How much of Witchcraft/Wicca are you able to incorporate into your everyday life?

Witchcraft, and being a witch, are an integral part of my life.  It defines how I look at the world, how I relate to the people around me, how I set my moral compass, and the direction my life takes.

But on the other hand– just because my spiritual path is outside of the mainstream, mysterious, ancient, intriguing, interesting, exciting, or any other adjectives you can think of– this does not mean that my every waking moment is riveted on the fact that I’m a witch and practice witchcraft.  I’m the mother of a large brood.  I have groceries to pickup, laundry to do, toilets to scrub, meals to cook; I have pets to take to the vet, kids to take to the dentist, and a million other everyday ordinary things to do.

My spirituality is a large part of who I am, as I plod through regular life, just like everyone else.

Do you have a familiar? If you do, tell us how you met him/her, and how she/he takes part in your practice (if at all).

Yes, I do…Salem.  He’s a beautiful black American Short Hair cat with a small white spot on his chest (called a ‘button’, by the way).  He is elusive, prefers to live downstairs (away from the dog and visitors).  My husband has lived in this house almost two years and has only seen him once.  Various people have been to this house and have never seen him.  I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking he is a figment of my imagination.  But he is extraordinarily loving, and sweet with me.  He looks deeply into my eyes and communicates quite clearly.  He is my Sweet Boy.

Does he take part in rituals or spell casting?…only in so far as eating all the catnip that I left out one evening; rolling through the black circle of stones which I had so carefully laid on the floor; tipping over a bottle of open oil; or trying to push his way into my lap as I sit in a cast circle trying to be all mystical and witchy and serious.
