Oh, Blessed Dirt

Life has been hectic for us here lately, so many things stirring in the cauldron– the good, the bad, financial, medical, personal, business, both positive and negative.  We’re still in the Middle-Of-Life, though I hadn’t expected this at the tale-end of middle-age.  Needless to say, “Stress” has been our companion, my companion, for the past several weeks, months; and I wanted to share a wonderful “Aha!” moment.

I just came in from weeding the garden.  I came in with dirty hands, sweaty hair, muddy jeans, grubby feet– and it feels soooo good!  I *love-love-love* getting down on the ground, playing in the dirt, getting dirty!  And as I’m on my knees thinking how Peaceful this is, how Grounding this is– Dirt!— the “Aha” hit me…Of course, it’s grounding.  Of course, Dirt is connected– to the Earth (planet & element)– and to the Goddess! (duh)

Do you realize that children instinctively know this?  They know this and acknowledge it and act on it until a grownup tells them not to.  No wonder children love to play in the dirt– there is a reason for this!

I feel reconnected.

Dirt is dirty, but our kids need it. Research shows kids who play in the dirt are healthier than those shrouded in a germ-free bubble. Why kids and mud are the perfect pair...

My Daughter: A Featured Artist @ Tonight’s Reception

Proud Mama Announcement: My daughter, Anne, is a Featured Artist at Gallery 92. There will be a reception tonight from 5-7pm, 92 West 6th St., Fremont NE…I’ll take lots of photos, so I’ll make a slideshow tomorrow.

You can see my reflection, and the reflection of Anne’s sisters, Sara & Emma, in the glass.

Yes, we’re lurking.

My Wedding Ring: Labradorite

I started off my marriage to Joe with a traditional wedding band– a channel ring with diamonds, purchased at a fancy-schmancy jewelry store in Omaha.  I don’t have it now (long story, this will be another blog post for another time).  I needed a replacement.  Joe is very “traditional” about some things (not so much about others), and he had it in his head that I would want/should have a traditional bridal set, complete with the diamonds that he loves so much.  The issues for me were 1) that I’m not a conventional person; 2) diamonds are not my favorite stone, they’re actually way down on my list; 3) I cannot abide by the outrageous ridiculously high prices the fancy-schmancy jewelry stores charge.

I didn’t want to make a fast purchase just to have a ring.  I wanted to find a ring that resonated with me, with Joe, and with our relationship.  I wanted to find that ring, the one you see and you think:  “That ring is My Ring!”

One day last week, we had to make a trip into Omaha on business, and of course we stopped at our favorite new-age shop:  Next Millennium.  (We were married in this shop, by the way, right at the front counter, by the owner, Charlie.) …So this story and it’s ending are so extremely well-suited.

This was an unusual day, for one thing, because we didn’t have to rush to be Somewhere Else, we were on our own time and our own schedule.  This meant Time to Browse.  I wish you could smell scents on the internet, the shop always smells beautiful and exotic with incense going; and the background music is always enchanting and relaxing.  I have spent many happy hours with my nose pressed to the glass of the jewelry display cases, and I intended to add even more hours to this happy occupation.

A tray of rings caught my eye.

It was graciously removed from the display case and set before me on the counter. I looked at a couple rings that I had initially noticed first, and then I saw The Ring.  It was one of those 1 second pauses that actually feel like several minutes.  I slipped it on my finger, and I knew without a doubt– this was My Ring.

wedding ring 1

I chose this ring by instinct, on a whim, without knowing all of the properties, energies, and correspondences that go along with Labradorite. (Contrary to popular belief, I’m not a walking encyclopedia of new-age knowledge. I have to Look-Stuff-Up, just like everybody else.)  And this is exactly what I did when I got home.  I was amazed, absolutely amazed, without giving away every nuance of our private lives.  The results of my search only served to strengthen my belief in the magick of stones and crystals and their ability to draw you to them when you need their energy and their magick, as well as when you are aligned with their energy and their magick.

Negative:  The Egotist

Egotists are people who think their efforts alone carry them through life.  They believe that they are separate from a greater whole of existence and that their striving and effort controls the outcome of their life.

3) Astrological Connections:  Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius

Again, I find the association amazing– Joe is Scorpio (which explains a lot, but that’s another blog post).

Leo…is self-expression seeking confidence, ease, and honor in the social world.  The house where your Leo rules is where you will be challenged to “shine”; to apply the positive, creative qualities of your sun sign, and find a sense of inner peace.

Scorpio…is intense emotional power probing and penetrating into the unconscious; seeking the power of transformation at work in ordinary reality; seeking to accept all that is frightening or overwhelming.  The house where your Scorpio rules is where you will be challenged to completely transform your life. You seek control in this part of your life and can be manipulative and secretive.

Sagittarius…is an expansion quest to discover truth and the interconnectedness of all things.  The house where your Sagittarius rules is where you will be challenged to expand your experiences. You are philosophical about the affairs of this house, and generous with its gifts.

Emotional/Spiritual Qualities:  Allows magick to happen; stabilizes the aura and enhances the flow of energy between the aura and the chakras; helps with insecurity, anxiety, and stress

5) Other Qualities, Attributes, and Information about Labradorite

“…Labradorite is thought by some to symbolize the moon and the sun and has, in fact, been found to be a constituent of moon rock.  Feldspar, and therefore Labradorite, assists one to progress from old ways, encouraging unconventional and exciting new methods to attain one’s goals.  Labradorite can also assist one to handle changes, promoting strength and perseverance.  It has been known as the Matriarch of the Subconscious Mind, facilitating the transformation of intuition into intellectual thought.  It is said to be helpful in the treatment of disorders of the brain, to stimulate mental acuity, and to reduce anxiety and stress.  It can assist in digestion, regulation and metabolism and has been used to clarify the eyes.  Labradorite is Saturday’s gemstone.”

“…A stone of transformation, Labradorite prepares body and soul for the ascension process.  This highly mystical and protective stone raises consciousness and deflects unwanted energies from the aura, preventing energy leakage.  Holding esoteric knowledge, it takes you into another world or into other lives.  This crystal helps banish fears and insecurities and the psychic debris from previous disappointments, strengthening trust in the universe.  Labradorite removes other people’s projections, including thought forms hooked into the aura.  With Labradorite, analysis and rationality are balanced with inner sight.  Labradorite is a useful companion through change, imparting strength and perseverance.”

Regarding yellow Labradorite, which my ring contains: “…Yellow Labradorite accesses the highest levels of consciousness, assisting visualization, trance, clairvoyance, and channeling.  It expands the mental body, attuning it to higher wisdom.  This stone is useful for detaching from undue influence or manipulation by others, and especially for treating codependency or an enabler who is unable to let the person learn their own lessons in life or who unconsciously wants to prolong dependency.”

Joe & I, standing on a ledge behind a waterfall in The Lied Jungle @ Henry Doorly Zoo, Omaha.

The Metal:

Silver

Energy: receptive (feminine)
Planet: Moon
Element: Water
Powers: love, psychism, dreams, protection, travel
(physical & astral), money

When worn, silver stimulates psychic awareness and personal abilities and is often worn during divination. You can wear silver to bed to enhance prophetic dreams and to aide in astral travel. It is a protective talisman worn by travelers, particularly to those traveling on or over water. Silver is connected to the energy of the Moon and the Goddess (feminine divinity), and can be worn to aide in a Wiccan ritual known as “€œDrawing Down the Moon”€.

Memories in a Handful of Stones

These three stones were sent to me by a friend, a friend who lives on the east coast– a magickal, creative, saucy little witch.  She brought her special energy to all that she did, everything she touched, from her whimsical blog full of recipes for Pagan holidays to the connections she made in the Pagan world on a variety of social sites. She was loved and respected among us all.

I forgot exactly what the circumstances were that surrounded the stones and why she sent them, but that really isn’t important; I treasure them.  I keep them in a beautiful sterling silver dish that is a leaf, a gift from my son.  The stones and the leaf are perfect together.

This lovely lady didn’t pass on, as you may have thought when you started reading this post, which sounds somewhat like a eulogy.  I guess it is a eulogy in a way; it’s memorializing, remembering, and honoring the spirit of a Sister-Witch who no longer exists.  The lovely lady simply decided to take another path in life, she went down a fork in the road, veering away from all the places she had been to have new adventures in a new life.  I miss the magickal, creative, saucy little witch; but I’d like to think that some of her energy still exists here, in these stones, and in the memories I carry.

I wish her well.  I hope that her explorations unearth new friends and positive connections.  I hope that she is happy in the life she’s chosen and the path she’s following.

Witches

What do you do?

What do you do?  I’m asked this question all the time, in respect to my spiritual path, in respect to religious practices and routine, in respect to practicing witchcraft.  People think in conventional terms of what they are familiar with– you have to attend a church service once a week, you have to follow this rule, you have to obey that rule, you have to undergo certain ceremonies (rites of passage) at particular set intervals, you have to follow a leader, etc.  Paganism, and especially witchcraft, is not like that, it’s not like that at all.  I keep trying to tell people, to explain to them, but I don’t think they understand.

Truth is, I don’t do a damn thing unless the urge hits me.  I might go for days, or weeks, or months without lifting one magickal finger to cast one crummy spell.  Then– Pow!– something comes up, something comes up that actually needs to be taken care of, there is a reason, there is a rhyme behind it.  Something comes up in life that needs my attention, so I take care of it with a spell, with a candle, with herbs, with a poppet, with other magickal twists and turns, whatever needs doing.

And that’s what I do.  There’s no law in my book that says I have to run around interneting people Happy this, or Blessed that– if I choose not to observe ‘traditional’ pagan holidays, that’s my choice, that’s my decision.  The sky isn’t going to fall, and  my magickal little soul will be just fine.

And that’s what I do…just exactly what I want to do.

This is the spirit of the witch…it wreaks of freedom.

Our Katz

[Originally published in The Witch’s Corner newsletter, June 2011…Pixie passed away since this post was first published]

Katz

(Salem & Pixie, sitting in *their* spot at the livingroom windows, watching birds & squirrels at the feeders.)

We have six cats, or Katz, in our house, and each one is a unique creature that stands out from all the others with a staunch individualism that only cats can carry off successfully.  There’s Salem, the sleek black prince of the house, who enjoys a great deal of affection, and can’t seem to wait until 5:30am, the time my husband normally rises for work, to come greet us in bed with morning nips to the fingers, purring, chirping, and carrying on. Unfortunately, Salem seems to think that *every* morning must begin this early and in this way…whether the alarm goes off or not.

At the other extreme is our brown tabby cat, Basil.  Basil was born with the soul of an irrascible old man.  He doesn’t want to be touched, he doesn’t really like it when you talk to him, and he puts a lot of effort into pretending not to listen.  He doesn’t even like you to get too close, and goddess forbid, don’t make eye contact.  And just like some crabby old man, he spends a lot of time growling, hissing, and complaining.

(Basil, napping on the back porch.)

Bast is the ‘Mama’ of the group, both figuratively and literally– she’s Basil’s mother.  She also runs our cat community with an iron fist, and if anyone gets out of line– either cat or human– she puts them back into place by giving them a good swift slap to the face.  Apparently this system works very well for her.  So far no one has questioned her authority or tried to usurp her position in the pecking order.

(Mama Bast)

Pixie, also known as “Mistress Pixie Paws”, is just plain weird.  She’s known around the house as ‘Spook’, for the unnerving habit of calmly watching us out of glassy gold-green eyes when we least expect it, and then blinking complacently when we’re startled.  She is a sprite, a magickal creature, one of the elves or nymphs come to spy on us humans.  Her actions are usually slow and deliberate, occasionally totally off the wall and unexpected, and always entertaining.

This cat also has the ability to fall asleep anywhere in almost any position– occasionally even when she’s sitting up, human style.

(Pixie, sleeping on the arm of the couch, where she had fallen asleep sitting bolt upright in a human position, and then gradually slid to the right.)

Pyewacket defies explanation.  He’s a beautiful black angora that is very affectionate, likes to do a little ‘head-bumping’ greeting he has, and absolutely refuses to use a litter box– no way, no how.  Wintering with him in the house is hell.  He is banished to the laundry room, with the entire floor laid in newspapers.  I defy you to pick up one square of newspaper, because if you do, out of this entire room– and it’s big– he will choose that one bare spot of floor to do his business.

We’ve decided that, lovable and affectionate as he is, Pyewacket basically has the heart of an outdoor cat.

(Pyewacket, snoozing in his food bowl on the back porch.)

Baby, aka Duchess, is my ham.  Where the camera is, you’ll find Baby.  She winds up in more of my photos, and photos that I’ll use for particular purposes, more often than any of the other cats.  She also has two names, as you can see.

She is quiet, sort of out in a zone all on her own.  This cat also obviously interacts with beings or entities that only she can see.  We sat and watched her one day in the middle of the livingroom floor, as she circled an unseen being, her hair standing straight on end.  It must have been about the same size as herself, and as she circled it, all puffed up, she would reach inside this space, trying to sniff whatever it was.  Suddenly, it must have startled her, for she leaped backwards, all four paws off the floor.  And then it was gone.  I’m grateful that I had wittnesses to this extraordinary display.

Cats are lazy, plain and simple.  That’s the truth.  They spend their time eating or sleeping, with a little bit of play and shenanigans inbetween.

But mostly, they sleep…

Sometimes they like to share their space…

And sometimes, they don’t.

Just Saying

Magick & Witchcraft

1.  People get so upset about the fine line between ‘black’ magick and ‘white’ magick.  There really isn’t any line at all.  The intensity and direction of our magick depends upon our boundaries and how deeply we will allow someone to encroach upon our territory, our person, our life…when these boundaries are broached, that’s usually when magick begins to take on shades of gray…and in that case, it winds up being about protection and self-preservation.

2.  What kind of witch am I?…The ‘me’ that I normally am naturally slips into the witch that already exists.  If you are a normally bitchy person, you’re going to be one fine and mighty bitchy witch.  If you are a passive individual, so shall you be a passive witch.  The witch that you are is so wrapped up with the psyche that is ‘you’ that it is one and the same– indistinguishable from the rest of your humanity.

Writing

1.  The best writing that I’ve ever done is writing that I get lost in.

2.  Literature Classes…The most idiotic thing– this teacher in a Literature class in high school had us read some prose, and then she had us tell her how we interpreted it.  So I read it, and I told her.  I don’t remember today exactly what it was I read, but I do remember the intensity of feeling it created and the enthralling layers of personalities and possiblities that unfolded.

When I finished telling this teacher my breathless interpretation of this prose, she quietly and unceremoniously told me that I was wrong.

“Now”, she begins, “this is what it really means…”

I was stunned and crestfallen– had everything that I had experienced during my reading been false?

Moral:

Some people should never teach art or literature…those people who are trapped inside an invisible box they can’t see out; those people who are trapped in small minds and small lives; those people who can only justify their existence by feigned superiority; those people who insist that everyone must view the world through their eyes; those people who color all flowers red and all leaves green; those people who only see the sky as blue.

Age

1.  The older I get, the nearer the past seems.

2.  Life doesn’t slow down as you get older, it winds itself up tighter so that you have to run faster.

Samhain
October 31
Samhain (pronounced ‘Sou-wen’) is a celebration that has a more somber side than the revelry of modern Halloween. It is a day of remembrance of your ancestors and for those family members who have passed over.
Pagan families may set an extra place at the supper table on this evening, to honor those loved ones who are no longer with them. The veil between the world of the living and the dead is thinnest on this eve, and this night is an excellent time to perform divination, or try to connect with those from the other side.

Feast Foods: pumpkin, squash, nut breads, sweet potatoes, milled drinks (cider, wine), roast meat, root vegetables

Rituals/Spells:  making besoms, divination, spirit contact, crone magick, working with dark energy, spells for new beginnings

Crafting Your Magic
Ancestral magic is cast with the Blood Moon. Do magic now to communicate with family members who have passed, to connect with your ancestors and your heritage. Magic surrounding divination is relevant, it’s the perfect time. Cast spells for justice and balance, and to overthrow anything oppressive which may be blocking your path to success. Ambition is highlighted, use magic to increase the potency of your own, or cast magic to contain ambition that may have run amok. This is also the perfect time to step into the dark shadows and take advantage of the vibrations found there. The gray witch revels in the magic of the Blood Moon and in this season.

Magickal Herbs

HERBALPICTURES.jpg picture by witch_of_endore

In the tradition of Samhain, we’re going to look at herbs used to call up spirits.

Mugwort
To bring forth protective & benevolent spirits, Mugwort is burned on charcoal with star anise, althea, and resin incenses like frankincense, myrrh, copal, or benzoin.
Energy: feminine/receptive
Planet: Venus
Element: Earth
Powers: strength, psychic powers, protection, prophetic dreams, healing, astral projection

falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore

 Dandelion
The root, when dried, roasted, and ground like coffee, is used to make a tea. This infusion will promote psychic powers. This same tea, steaming and placed beside the bed, will call spirits.
Energy: masculine/projective
Planet: Jupiter
Element: Air
Powers: divination, wishes, calling spirits

falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore

 Thistle
To call Spirits, place some thistle in boiling water. Remove from heat and lie or sit beside it. As the steam rises call the spirits and listen carefully; they may answer your questions.
Energy: masculine/projective
Planet: Mars
Element: Fire
Powers: strength, protection, healing, exorcism, hex-breaking

falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore

Wormwood
Wormwood is burned to summon spirits. It is sometimes mixed with sandalwood for this purpose. If burned in graveyards the spirits of the dead will rise and speak, according to old grimoires.
Energy: masculine/projective
Planet: Mars
Element: Fire
Powers: psychic powers, protection, love, calling spirits

falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore

Sweetgrass
Burn sweetgrass to attract good spirits, or beings, before performing spells.
(Strangely enough, I couldn’t find any correspondences listed for sweetgrass, other than it’s power to call in spirits.)

Disclaimer: Never ingest any herbs, or feed them to someone else,
if you are not absolutely sure they are safe!

Kitchen Wytchery
Elsie204.jpg kitchen witch 2 picture by witch_of_endore
As the Kitchen Witch knows, natural magick can be found in certain foods, recipes, as well as herbs. In this section we’re going to put this knowledge to work.
Witches-Kitchenbymagic_art.jpg icon kitchen witch picture by witch_of_endore
We celebrate Samhain at our house big time. I’m going to include in this newsletter my own recipe for pumpkin pie & my ‘secret’ recipe for the large pot of hot apple cider that is a tradition at our house. The photos included are family photos of Samhains past.
My Pumpkin Pie:
1 16 oz. can pumpkin (about 2 cups)
1 13 oz. can evaporated milk (but sometimes I use sweetened condensed milk– it makes it more ‘chiffony’…is that a word?)
2 eggs 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 sugar
the spices:
Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, and a dash of salt. Most recipes call for 1/2 teaspoon each, but I’m much more generous with my spices!
the crust:
I tried for years to learn to make a good pie crust, and I almost gave up out of frustration– then I found this recipe. It’s almost foolproof, no kidding.
2 and 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup shortening 1 beaten egg 1 tablespoon vinegar 1/4 cup water
Mix the dry ingredients together and cut in the shortening, as usual. Then combine the egg and vinegar, stirring it up a bit, and add this to your dry ingredients. Add the water a dash at a time as you work it in, you’ll be able to tell when you get a good texture.
Edit:  I bake this pie at 425 degrees for the first 15 minutes; then I turn the oven down to 400 degrees for the next 30-45 minutes, until it’s cooked enough to thicken the filling. I check this by sticking a clean butter knife in the center– when the knife comes out “clean”, I know the pie is done.

Hot Apple Cider
I have a *Huge*– did I say huge?– kettle that I use to mix up my cider. This sits and simmers all afternoon on the backburner of my stove, wafting a wonderful aroma throughout the house.
Ingredients:
5-7 large jugs of applejuice 8-10 bags of peach tea a handful of cinnamon sticks and a large metal tea ball filled with whole cloves and allspice.
You can leave a shaker of nutmeg sit on the counter & anyone who wants to add a dash of this spice to their mug of apple cider can do so.  If you don’t like this cider full force, you can dilute it some with water to suit your own taste.

myworldsamhainpreparations.jpg picture by Amythyst1

Our kitchen isn’t as organized as Rachel Ray’s or Martha Stewart’s, but we get the job done. Above are kettles of cider brewing in preparation for a Samhain evening.
falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore
Let’s take a look at the ingredients we just used from a magickal perspective:
Peaches— love
Nutmeg— one of the most popular uses for nutmeg is to assure fidelity. It’s also used for spells centered around luck, money, and health.
Cinnamon— spirituality, success, healing, power, psychic powers, lust, protection, love
 Allspice— money, luck, healing
 Cloves— protection, exorcism, love, money
Apple— love, healing, garden magic, immortality
Happy Samhain!!

Surviving the Cursed Winter Wonderland

We made it through this last major winter storm, none the worse for wear, but a little frayed where the nerves are concerned– six kids, two adults, and seven cats– all hunkered down while the winds howl and the snow blows and the storm rages outside our humble cottage.

Gawds, I hate winter. I don’t know how/why I’ve managed to stay in the upper mid-west all of my 52 years…insanity or lack of ambition, it must be one of those. Personally, I’d vote for insanity, as lack of ambition would be embarrassing.  Anyway, the sun is shining once more, but the temperature has taken a nose dive, and we woke up this morning to well below zero temps– actual temps, not that crazy wind-chill ‘this-is-what-it-feels-like’ spiel.

In winter, I do believe that Mother Nature is out to kill us– or to weed out the weaklings, that only the strongest may survive. Egads. Survival of the fittest.
