The Witch’s Desk: Snobbery Within the Pagan Community

6

We think that the Pagan, all hippie love-child neo-nature spiritualist, are above the snobbery of the mundane middle-of-the-road Christian mainstream society.  Well, we’re not.  Pagans are just as human as the rest of the population, and we fall into all the same societal traps, we just don’t like to admit it, and we tend to fall back on the peace, love, nature theme to justify ourselves (look at how spiritual I am, look at how in-tune with nature I am, look at how white is my magick, how pure my intentions, how saintly I am).

This is how it really is:  Just because we practice witchcraft, just because we believe in magick, just because we worship the Goddess, does not mean we are perfect by any means, nor does it imply that we are necessarily even nice– some of us aren’t.  Sorry, but this is reality.  Pagans can be snobbish, elitist, bigoted, holier-than-thou, and just as irritating as any Southern Baptist, as any Catholic, as any Fundamentalist, as any anything.

There is always conflict in the Pagan community, among ourselves.  Pagans are just as opinionated as the next person; and there are very definite views and contradictions, contentions and disputes.  The disputes range from how to practice witchcraft; how to practice goddess worship, what about the god; how to practice magick, what’s acceptable, what’s dark, what’s too dark, what’s light, what’s too light; pantheons– you can’t mix them, it’s okay to mix them, a Greek goddess would be angry if her energy was mixed with a Nordic goddess and your magick won’t work; you weren’t initiated by another witch, or you weren’t initiated in a coven, so you can’t be a witch; you can only do spells on certain days aligned with certain energies or it won’t work; you should cast spells in the heat of the moment; you should never cast spells in the heat of the moment; I’m a Very-Important-Witch because I was initiated by someone who was initiated by someone who was initiated by someone (however many times back) who was initiated by another Very-Important-Witch…and so it goes.

The goddess from one pantheon would be angry if her energy was mixed with the goddess from another pantheon– who the hell knows that?  What mortal can say this with finality?  In truth, if magick works through energy and there are five goddesses out there, all from different pantheons, whose attributes all work for the same purpose, their energy aimed at the same outcome, why couldn’t you work with all five of them for some kick ass enormously powerful energy?  Truth is, you could, and you can.  At the other end of the spectrum is the pagan who embraces and immerses themselves in the deities from one pantheon, who swears by and only works with the gods and goddesses from one culture, and this is okay too

The truth is that paganism, or any spiritual path for that matter, can be practiced anyway that the practitioner chooses.  You cannot police another person’s spirituality.  You cannot force people to believe, or to practice what you do, or how you do it.

There’s been a segment of Pagans, around for some time now, who combine witchcraft and Christianity, and this has driven both hardcore Pagans and hardcore Christians nuts.  “They can’t do this!” both sides howl in indignation.  Why not?  Who says?…I mean who says, who says who really has any authority, whose opinion would really count?  No one, nada.  If a Christian Witch wants to cast a circle and use Christ for her god-form and Mary as the goddess, who’s going to stop her? Whose going to be standing around policing her spiritual practices?  The fact is that no one has the right to interfere in this case.  This witch is what she is, she’ll find her energy through the magickal means available to her, and I predict that the universe will work with her, blessing her endeavors.

There are also cliques.  Really.  You think this is a phenomena relegated to the halls of Junior High?  Well, you would be wrong.  Adults are just as guilty of being cliquish as teen-agers, and Pagans are no exception to this.  Sometimes these cliques are disguised as covens, or as literary groups (who has the magickal stamp-of-approval from the powers that be and who does not), or social site groups, pagan internet societies, or any other such society by which people must be okayed and allowed in.  I can understand this to a point, as in the case of a coven, where a very specific number of people are desired; but in a vast internet social site, or a Pagan Page, etc., it gets a little stickier, a little trickier.

A spiritual path is suppose to enlighten us, to inspire us, to help us live better lives, more productive lives.  We find our inspiration where we do, by super-natural and miraculous means.  It really is magickal, this business of finding one’s path, working ones spells, solemnizing life with our little rituals.  The most we can do is to try– try to be better human beings; try to be kinder; try to be more open-minded; try to be understanding; try to love other people and treat them well; try to see the world and the universe in the big-picture scheme of things.

All we can do is try– and some of us will succeed.

Herbs: Rosemary… “Dew of the Sea”

Rosemary

A Rosemary Summoning Spell:

Use rosemary and a pinch of Drawing Powder to summon someone to you that you have feelings for, or whose help you need. This could include someone you have romantic feelings for; someone you love in a platonic way; someone that you’re connected to through blood or circumstance; or someone whose help you need with an issue or personal problem. Think of this spell as a pied piper’s wiggling finger inferring, “Come hither.”

You will gather a handful of dried rosemary, a photo/signature/or name paper of the one you need to summon, and a lovely little fire– either outdoors in a nice fire pit, or a smaller adaptation in your cauldron.

When you get your fire burning properly, drop into it the photo/signature/or name paper; next, the rosemary, sprinkling it carefully so you don’t smother your flames. And finally, just a pinch of Drawing Powder.

As the flames consume the ingredients of your spell, chant:

“Blessed rosemary, I call unto thee;
Summon (name) to come to me.”

The Witch’s Desk

I receive questions on an almost daily basis, in emails, through Facebook, the form at my website, and through other Pagan social sites.  I try to answer as many as I can, but I’ve realized that I’m running a losing race at this.  I’ve chosen a few questions that have struck me either with a sense of urgency, or maybe even a sense of alarm (like, wouldn’t the answer to this one be obvious!); and I’ve chosen a couple I want to include in this blog; one fits the sense of urgency, and the other one a sense of alarm.  These questions are going to be posted exactly as I received them, unedited:

1.  can you mix goofer dust into a run drink to make same one sick or maybe wi same cake

No!…no, no, and no!!  Goofer dust is not edible and is not safe to consume.  The main components in the Goofer Dust that I make myself are cemetery dirt, sulpher (which can be purchased at a green house), and crushed snake sheds.  Anyone who doubts the effects of ‘magick’ would soon have their doubts put to rest if they got a chance to watch what happens to someone when Goofer Dust is used against them.  I know– I’ve seen it.  If you’re going to use this type of magick, use it as it was meant to be used– in the form of spells and mojo; just do not ever administer a poisonous or otherwise unsafe ingredient to someone through food or drink.

Better alternatives:  If you are in an abusive situation– go to the authorities or a local women’s shelter for help and assistance.  If you’re with someone you can’t stand– leave them.  If you’re angry with a boyfriend because he’s cheated on you– dump him and consider yourself lucky to have seen the light and dodged the bullet.

2.  Hello! I had some questions about the proper use of stones. Long story short, I have a roommate who isn’t the biggest fan of my life style. I’m very new to Wicca and I’m not sure how to feel about her recent actions. I recently got a kyanite stone for the house and set it up on a bookshelf with a few other of my stones to help the health of our home. She didn’t seem to really care all that much but I woke up this morning and she had knitted a gross around my kyanite stone. I’m hoping this is her way of showing she cares but I also don’t wan’t to interfere with the stones energy. If this impacts it at all will you let me know? Thank you so much!

Her recent actions, even if good intentions were meant (and I’m not so sure they were), to touch something sacred and personal that was yours, is very disrespectful.  This would not be my favorite kind of roommate.  Have a talk with her; being open and honest is the best approach.  My ire is rankled a bit by this, so I’m afraid I’d tell her in no uncertain terms to keep her cotton pickin’ fingers off my stuff– and I don’t care if this is magickal items or mundane things (this is one of my personal pet peeves).  At least emphasize that she should not tamper with your altar, candles, stones, etc., as she’s messing with energy that she doesn’t understand.

Another way of looking at this:  She is Christian, I’m assuming, and she might be frightened of Paganism or any other spiritual path she’s been taught to fear.  Discuss the use of stones with her, as well as Wicca and the fact that this is an earth-based religion similar in many ways to American Native Shamanism, that there is no devil worship, that this is simply a god and goddess inspired spiritual path and the majority of people who follow it have good intentions, pure hearts.  You have to try and reassure her that it is not harmful and there’s nothing to be afraid of– which might be a tall order, easier said than done.

3.  Dear Amythyst Raine-Hatayama, I would like to know if I could and/or should desire a succubus for a Lover? Is this possible? I have read articles stating it could be done. Although my better judgement thinks a supernatural force can not be controlled for my use and may lose in the long run. Lost in time

Quite frankly, I don’t know, and I haven’t thought about it.  D.J. Conway touched on the subject of “astral lovers” in one of her books (can’t remember which one).  Personally, I find real-life relationships the most challenging and the most rewarding.  I’ll leave astral lovers of any kind for someone else to experiment with.

If I were you, I’d go with your better judgment.

4.  Hi, I came across your profile through an online page, where you’ve told that you practise witch stuff and you’re a good soul. I’m interested in being a witch, a good one and I was hoping if you could help me out, tell me your experience, how does it feel, can you still be connected to your god and stuff. I don’t know if its okay to approach you this way, but if you dont mind, I need advices. 🙂

I wish I had the time and energy to type out the oodles and oodles of experiences and advice you’re wanting to hear, but I just don’t.  I will suggest that you 1) make use of this blog; its filled with my personal experiences at practicing witchcraft, as well as information on this topic; 2) You’ll also find information along this bent in my book, “The Gray Witch’s Grimoire”.

(I’m a good soul?)…I don’t believe I’ve ever said that of myself, but hopefully, I am.

Fairy Angels-- how's that for a hybrid mythical entity? :)

Find the Magick: in a cup of tea

coffee time 3

In the spirit of Kitchen Wytchery, let’s find the magick in a cup of tea, and I’m not talking about a special cup of tea that we’re brewing just for some magickal mysterious purpose, but a ready-made tea purchased at the local grocery store.  *These teas are chockfull of herbs which all contain magickal occult properties, something the average person is totally unaware of.  We’re going through the ingredients to find out just what kind of energies we’re working with:

  • The tea:  “Dream Easy”
  • The brand:  “Hyvee” (a local grocery store chain here in the mid-west, this is their store brand)
  • The ingredients:  chamomile, spearmint, lemon grass, tilia flowers, blackberry leaves, orange blossoms, hawthorn berries, rosebuds

The Magick:

  • 1.  Chamomile:  energy/projective (masculine); planet/Sun; element/Water.  First, I beg to differ with the source I’m using for this info, but I find the fact that this herb’s energy is masculine (projective) and it’s planetary association (the Sun) is  also masculine, yet it’s linked to the feminine element of Water– I get it “sleepy time, relaxing, etc.”; and, Water, as in dreams. But this still doesn’t feel right to me– the sun, the energy, all points to the element of Fire.  Just saying.

Magickal energies:  for sleep, to promote calmness, but also for luck in money matters; used in issues dealing with god energy– men’s mysteries, men’s health, etc., healing energies in general.

  • 2.  Spearmint:  energy/receptive (feminine); planet/Venus; element/Water.

Magickal energies:  used to promote healing, especially of the lungs (respiratory issues); used to promote love– actually to generate a little lust it’s said, though this herb would not be my first choice in this matter, way too tame to ignite this kind of raw passion, if you ask me, spearmint would lend itself better to something quieter and more deliberate, like sultry seduction; used to sharpen your mental faculties, though the element used for this endeavor would best be left to Air.  It’s also said that this is the herb you want to tuck into your pillow, or keep near your bed, as it will protect you at your most vulnerable– when you’re asleep.

  • 3.  Lemon grass:  energy/projective (masculine); planet/Mercury; element/Air.

Magickal energies:  This herb is used to repel snakes– though, unless they were poisonous or dangerous, I don’t know why anyone would deliberately want to repel snakes, unless they had some deep seated phobia.  Snakes are beneficial to your garden, and reflective of wisdom and goddess energy.  Lemon grass is also used to heighten your psychic awareness, and again, this is another herb used to enhance lust.

  • 4.  Tilia flowers:  (also known as “linden flowers” or “lime flowers”) energy/receptive (feminine); planet/Venus; element/Water.

Magickal energies:  the energies are geared to love, luck, sleep, rest, dreams, weddings, and beauty.  What’s not to love about tilia flowers.  The energy of the Linden trees are said to be protective, this is also a ‘tree of immortality’, which would lend it’s energy perfectly for magickal spells of eternal youth and beauty; this is a favorite herb for all kinds of love magicks.  Make a dream pillow of equal parts lavender and tilia which promotes both restful sleep and prophetic dreams.

  • 5.  Blackberry leaves:  energy/receptive (feminine); planet/Venus; element/Water.  This herb is sacred to the old Celtic goddess Brighid, renowned for healing, poetry, and smithcraft.  She’s most notably celebrated on February 2nd, a holiday called Imbolc.

Magickal energies:  healing, money, and protection.

  • 6.  Orange Blossoms:  energy/projective (masculine); planet/Sun; element/Fire.

Magickal energies:  love (known as “Love Fruit”), divination, luck, and money.  The dried peel and seeds are used in a wide array of love magick, whether it be candle magick, mojo bags, or dollies, and this magick is serious– whompom serious– this is magick geared to culminate with a walk down the aisle. (I think it’s a hoot that orange blossoms are tremendously popular in wedding bouquets, but the general public doesn’t have a clue as to why.) Enhance your beauty by adding orange seeds to your bath water, or by drinking orange juice with this intention.  This adds a new dimension to the old saying “beautiful inside and out”, no kidding, there are many forms of beauty, and what you are inside is going to show on the outside. (There’s a few specific people I’d like to point this out to but, ahem, we’ll move on.)  Orange blossoms are added to love and lust potions, and since the element here is Fire, use with discretion, I imagine these potions carry quite a punch.  The divination aspect, specifically for yes/no questions– ask a question, eat an orange, count the seeds– even/yes; odd/no.

  • 7.  Hawthorn berries:  energy/projective (masculine); planet/ Mars; element/Fire.

Magickal energies:  fertility, chastity, fishing luck, happiness.  Because of it’s ability to increase fertility, this herb was long used in wedding ceremonies; on the other side of this coin, and it’s quite a flip– the leaves of the Hawthorn tree are said to promote chastity.  I would imagine that these leaves, along with nutmeg, could be used in some high-falutin fidelity magick, but this would best be done with extreme caution, or there might be a whole lot of people who are going to find themselves suddenly celibate when this is not the desired outcome.  Carry these berries with you on fishing ventures to fill your nets (and your skillet); use these berries to help alleviate depression (magically speaking, mind you); and turn to the Hawthorn for protection from lightening and evil spirits.

The Hawthorn tree does have some weight in the world of the witch– they use to be used to decorate Maypoles for Beltaine, and as far as lore goes, it was believed that Hawthorn trees were actually witches who transformed themselves into the tree (to avoid being burned at the stake, no doubt).  Hawthorn trees are sacred to the witch.

  • 8.  Rosebuds:  energy/receptive (feminine); planet/Venus; element/Water.

Magickal energies:  love (and divination for love), psychic powers, healing, protection.

Are you kidding, this is The Ultimate Herb used for all kinds of love magicks, bar none.  It is the epitome of love magick, encompassing human coupling on every level imaginable, and many levels you haven’t imagined yet.  It’s worn for this purpose, given as a gift for this purpose, used in candle magick, mojo bags, hoodoo dollies, and in any significant way that a practitioner can come up with; it’s been burned, buried, and frozen, all in the name of love.  A tea made of rosebuds is drank at bedtime to promote healthy sleep and prophetic dreams– and what do you think the main topic of these dreams will be– you got it.  Rosebuds and rosehips are used in spells to attract fairies to your garden, to heal minor aches and pains, as well as to relieve stress.

Now, drink your tea…

*Note:  This statement is not meant to alarm anyone who doesn’t practice witchcraft.  By using these teas, you are not inadvertently casting magick spells hither and thither.  Remember– everything used and done to cast a spell must be used and done with intention.  It’s all in the mind; it’s all in your purpose.

So What Kind of Spell Do You Need?

Putting a spell together takes some thought, some research, some planning, and some foot-work (particularly if you don’t have necessary items on hand and have to purchase them, or cultivate them from nature).  So start with a question:  What kind of spell do you need?

Okay, I have a volunteer– “Stacy”.  She has asked me to put a spell together for her to help her with issues of fertility;  and she has kindly agreed to allow the making of this spell to be posted publicly, though her identity will be kept secret.  (Thank you, Stacy!)

First, what does this issue involve deity-wise; what planetary and elemental connections are we talking about here; what sort of herbs would add the energy needed; candle color; timing; what sort of ritual to set this magic off– informal, most likely for a solitary practitioner who practices quietly; what other objects or ‘personal items’ would we need to collect; how would we finish this spell up– release the energy– dispose of the remnants (Or would we dispose of the remnants?).  Can you see all the questions involved in constructing a spell?  Can you see why the practice of witchcraft can be a lot of work?  It requires a vesting of our energy, our mental thought and attention; it can be time consuming, and it must be carried off to work in the first place– which means making the time to actually cast the spell.

It isn’t easy being a witch.  It’s not like the movies at all.  There’s no big ole’ magick wand that we can wave with a special word or two spoken and ‘voila, the spell is cast and magick happens immediately.  Get “real”, sez I.  Here’s how real magick works, get ready to roll up your sleeves and put your energy into it…

First, the Deity:  It might surprise you that I’m not going to choose one of the many goddesses who are connected to physical fertility; instead, I’m going to invoke the energy and spirit of “Papa Legba”.  This entity was greatly maligned recently on a popular television program, depicted as a cocaine snorting devil with an unquenchable thirst for pure human souls (babies).  It’s wise to remember that a lot of what you watch on tv is Fiction, and that creating a riveting story is part of the screen writer’s job.  The ultimate irony in this is that Papa Legba is noted, invoked, and drawn upon by women with fertility issues, he is actually the anti-thesis of his television portrayal:

Papa Legba is the famous, and infamous, spirit of the crossroads, often appearing as an old black man.  He’s a spirit from the West African Voodoo tradition, and you will find him under the guise of many other names, including:  Elegba, Exu, and Papa La Bas– his New Orleans incarnation.

Papa Legba is a trickster who delights in practical jokes and word games, but he is also a spirit of amazing generosity and protective care.  He protects infertile women, removing obstacles to motherhood; and he assists the poor, often opening up paths and removing obstacles that hinder their growth towards prosperity.  It is said that Papa Legba stands at the crossroads with his shepherd’s crook, where he opens and closes access to life’s path.

Now that we’ve chosen the deity to invoke for the energy we need, what’s going to go along with him???

Ideally I would prefer to work with the energy of a full moon, or at least a waxing moon.  Papa Legba’s ideal days are Mondays and the third day of every month.  Mondays– perfect!– connected to the Goddess, women’s mysteries, the Moon, the element of Water, fertility, women’s physical and mental health.

Candle colors and altar colors would be red, black, and white (Also, ironically, these colors are connected with the three faces of the goddess: red, the mother; black, the crone; and white, the maiden.)  The unique thing about being notoriously eclectic is that it broadens my spiritual path, allowing me to make connections and magickal links to topics, energies, and entities that those aligned with only one tradition or magickal practice might not think about.

The main herb I want to use with this spell is the strawberry…but you can also incorporate other herbs in this spell, and I would suggest herbs and flowers that produce through abundant seeds, such as dill, dandelion, goober daisies, cherry tomatoes, etc.

garden magic 2

Okay, we have our deity, the timing, the colors, the herbs, now you have to decide what kind of magick you’re going to use, how are you going to process this spell and cast it.  I’m going to suggest a combination of candle magick with a mojo bag, using the remnants left over to create the mojo bag that will be kept in a safe and sacred spot…and we can even do something especially significant here.  Stacy, I’m going to speak directly to you now– go to one of those hobby shops (like Hobby Lobby or Michael’s), buy a small wooden box that you will paint and decorate yourself in a way that resonates with you and your idea of a baby; decorate this box in ways that connect with your deep desire.  To this box you can add baby booties, a bottle of baby lotion, a pacifier, a letter to this baby, and whatever else you have room for that will bring this child to life in your mind, that will make its existence real and solid, so that you can almost bury your face in his fuzzy fine hair and smell the scent– most importantly, you will add to this box the mojo bag full of spell remnants– the candle wax and ashes (if you burned any type of spell paper with it).  You could also add to the box small bags of the magickal herbs listed above.

Put this box in a very special and safe place, and have patience dear Lady, nature will work it’s own brand of magick at the perfect moment.

Ask the Witch: An Interview

1.You call yourself a witch. Do you ever worry about the negative connotations behind the term?

I identify completely, specifically, and thoroughly with the word “Witch”.  It is who I am, it is what I’m made of.  It envelops me genetically through familial connections, through spiritual connections, ancestral connections, through universal esoteric connections.  I revel in the word.  I worship the word and the idea of the creature behind the word.  It is one of the most positive connotations in the world.  It is the wise-woman, the healer, the mid-wife, the herbalist…it is the ultimate image of the perfect woman.

Here I should note that in modern times many males who embrace the pagan path refer to themselves as ‘male witches’, and they are, by all means, free to call themselves whatever they wish.  But for me, within my world, within my practice, within my experience, within my coven…”Witch” is “Woman”.

[*note:  scroll to the bottom of this post for further info]

Do witches have a creed of some sort?

Some do.  Those who follow specific paths and formal traditions, those who consider themselves Wiccan, those who practice what they call White Magick, those who stand at the edge of the cauldron and only dip one toe daintily, cautiously, carefully within the bubbling depths, they will have a creed.  The Wiccan creed is, “Harm none, do what ye will.”…this isn’t a bad creed.   It actually makes a lot of sense.  Those of us who follow this pagan path did not choose to do so in order to harm anyone.  Harming anyone or anything is not our intention, it is not what magick is for.  But there are exceptions.  Within the world of the Gray Witch, there are boundaries that, under certain circumstances, can be crossed.  The one thing that breaks the Wiccan Rede for me is the need for protection, the need for self-defense, the need to keep safe myself, my family, my home, and anything else connected to my world which would directly affect my standard of living, or my sense of well-being…Harm me or mine, and you will experience the wrath of the dark angels, the animosity of those spirits called upon for protection, for retribution, for justice.

What are today’s witch’s like?

Today’s witches are a diverse panorama of women from a varied melting pot of humanity.  They are immersed in our culture and within our communities so completely that they have become part of the tapestry of our modern world, rather than some medieval myth.

As I state at my website, The Witch’s Corner:

Who is the Witch?

She’s a teacher, a librarian, a nurse, a doctor, a lawyer, a shop keeper, a writer, a mother, a student. She’s a blue collar woman, she’s a professional woman, she runs a business, runs for office, runs a household. She’s a companion to her spouse, a grandmother, a partner to her same-sex mate. She could be any woman you’ve ever met and any woman that you interact with everyday.

What makes her different from other women? She sees things that other women don’t. Nature speaks to her in an ancient tongue that has been forgotten by most. Her body responds to the waning and waxing of the moon, to the powers of the planets, the changing of the seasons, the behavior of wild animals, the energies of the plants, the energies of the stones.

The Universe speaks to her with the colorful images on cards, by the crystal images of a glass ball, by the movement of the pendulum, by the visions only she is shown.

Who is the Witch?…She is the Sorceress, the Mother, the Healer, the Wise Woman, the Priestess. She is part of a dim and distant past, and she is the shining light of our future.

Witches celebrate the earth and the seasons. What specifically do you do?

We most certainly do celebrate the earth, the turning of the seasons, called “Wheel of the Year”.  The progression of the Goddess’s story is highlighted throughout the year; it’s connected to the natural world, through the cycles of birth, death, and rebirth.  And it’s interesting that you ask me this question, as this very topic is part of my next book.  As I try to explain about the significance of the Pagan holidays in our modern world:

“…I think, for one thing, we have some innate deep-seated unspoken need to have our lives punctuated by milestones; whether personal milestones like weddings, graduations, and births; or societal, communal, and spiritual milestones. There’s a strange reassurance that the universe works in an ordered and predictable manner and time table. And maybe this is comforting to us because so much of life is unexpected, unpredictable, played without a script, and undeniably finite.

Long after we are but a memory, there will still be people celebrating these pagan holidays, punctuating the end of summer, welcoming with open arms the predictable end to the season of light and warmth, retreating into the dark and comforting confines of winter and the still peace that it will bring, only to return to a new season of light with spring.”

What specifically do I do to celebrate these holidays?

Some of these holidays might pass quietly, barely noticed by the rest of the household, significant only to me, celebrated with somber reflection in the flame of a candle upon my personal altar.  Other holidays are more all inclusive; like Samhain, when we get all giddy and excited, decorating the house and grounds for the evening, opening our doors to friends and family, reconnecting with our ancestors; but also reconnecting with each other.  As the bonfire burns late into the night on Samhain Eve, and the air gets cooler, we huddle together, punctuating another year, reminiscing about the past and looking toward the future.

Is a coven supposed to be 13 women?

A coven can be anything you want it to be.  As far as I know there are no written rules and laws to be followed, there are no Pagan Police who will break down your door and serve you with a warrant if your coven is all female or all male, whether it has 13 members or a hundred. A coven is a very personalized group of people, like-minded people, gathering to celebrate their pagan spirituality, gathering to support each other in the day to day humdrum of daily life.  Coven members provide a shoulder to cry upon, an ear for listening, a field board for new ideas.  Your coven consists of people you can laugh with, be totally yourself with, and they are a group of individuals within this great big wide world with whom you can depend upon for loyalty.  Your coven should be a safe haven.

My personal preferences?…My coven (The Coven of Bristolwicks) is an all female coven consisting of 13 members.  I prefer the all female energy, the hen-party aspect if you will; I prefer a small group; I like the number 13- it’s significant to me and it ‘feels good’. I want Coven Sisters for all the reasons I just stated in the first paragraph.

Reality check– when you put any group of people together, it might take some time, some experimenting, some failures, before you create a group of individuals who will work well together, who will successfully support each other, who will get along, and who will ‘click’.  But when it works, you know it; and when it works, it is an amazing experience.

Is there a prescribed form to your rituals?

Yes and no.  I’ve performed formal rituals; I’ve written formal rituals.  I’ve done so in the past, and I probably will do so again in the future.  But this is not the only way I connect with the Divine; this is not the only way I celebrate my spiritual path; this is not the only way I create magick.  My favorite form of witchery lay in the world of the Kitchen Witch, the Green Witch, the natural witch.  Spells put together by the seat of your pants, on a wing and prayer, have been some of the most powerful– and successful–magickal endeavors of my life.  When Spirit hits you, when you make this connection, you want to grasp it when and where you find it.  My special connection with the Goddess does not rely upon getting all dressed up in formal robes and wielding a ceremonial sword to cast a formal circle.

How does being a witch help you in your everyday life?

Being connected to your spirituality, no matter what path you take, is reassuring in the idea that there is more to ‘the big picture’.  There’s something larger than ourselves, there is a higher power, there is a rhyme and reason to the Universe and how it works; and thus, there is a rhyme and reason for existence within this realm.

Witchcraft is a very unique spiritual path, in that the power to create change, the power to shape our lives, the power to overcome obstacles, all lay within us.  Divinity is part of us, not some intangible stereotype hovering in the heavens above watching as we screw up and drop to our knees.  I embrace the Goddess– I am the Goddess– and the Goddess is me.  All of life’s infinite possibilities lay in the knowledge of my own being and within the energies and entities that I have aligned my life with.

If you approach your spirituality in this way, everyday is a celebration of the miraculous.

*Note:  This blog and my experiences are related to the world through my eyes, through my world; it is a Woman’s Point of View.  My focus is on the feminine aspects of my spirituality, my beliefs, my practices, my experiences.  I could not, and would not, try to explain or write about the male pagan experience.

Beauty: Look Absolutely Spellbinding

Beauty…Mundane women of the world grasp at fancifully advertised chemical preparations to keep themselves beautiful, to achieve youthful skin, to stave off the effects of time– the Witch goes beyond that.  She knows that sometimes to achieve beauty and perfection, you have to get your hands dirty.  This spell is a good place to start:

Shed Your Skin Spell

This spell takes advantage of the energy of three creatures who change or freshen their appearance by literally coming out in a new skin:  the cicada, the moth or butterfly, and the snake.  And you’re going to be using in this spell one of three things:  the shed skin of a snake, the open and empty cocoon of a moth or butterfly, or the abandoned skin of a cicada.

Shudder now and get over the ‘ick’ factor– real magic requires girding up your loins and getting your hands dirty once in a while– as the gray witch will tell you.

Correspondences:

Day:  Friday– associated with Venus, beauty, and love
Hour:  1st/8th hour after sunrise;
3rd/10th hour after sunset
Planet:  Venus
Moon Phase:  waxing to full
Color:  pink, white, silver
Herbs:  for beauty– ginseng, lilac,
rose; for youth– catnip, valerian
Oil:  rose oil Stone:  rose quartz
Number: 6
Letters:  F, O, X– (no pun intended)
Symbols:  The symbol for Venus
Deities:  Venus/Aphrodite or Hathor

Items needed:

1.  The dried shell of a cicada,
a snakeskin, or abandoned cocoon
2.  A fireproof bowl
3.  A bottle of rose oil
4. A pink or white candle
5.  A red flannel bag

This spell works on the refreshing metamorphic energy of the creatures listed here.  It also works on the mind and what you see, or what you think you see.  This spell is not an instant facelift, but rather, it changes the perception of how others view you and how you view yourself.  It will give you the illusion of beauty and youth.

After the basic preparations are in place, the candles lit, the incense going, place upon your altar the fireproof bowl.  Drop within it the insect skin, cocoon, or the snake shed and light it afire– you may need a bit of a flammable oil sprinkled on the top to get it going.

When the fire has gone out and the remains have cooled off a bit, using your pestle, crush what’s left into a pulp, adding a few drops of rose oil and drippings from your pink or white candle until you get a good consistency with a nice scent.  Now take it in your hands– yes, in your hands– and roll it into a ball…drop this treasure in the red flannel bag.

Keep this bag in a secret spot, and on the evening of a full moon bring it out when you are alone in a darkened candle-lit room.  Stand before a mirror, calling to the changing energy of the creature whose remains are in the bag.  Wave the bag in a gentle back and forth motion before your face, saying:

“By the power of the creature here,
May youth and beauty shine pure and clear.
By the power of the creature within,
May I shed what’s old to reveal fresh young skin.”

What do you do?

What do you do?  I’m asked this question all the time, in respect to my spiritual path, in respect to religious practices and routine, in respect to practicing witchcraft.  People think in conventional terms of what they are familiar with– you have to attend a church service once a week, you have to follow this rule, you have to obey that rule, you have to undergo certain ceremonies (rites of passage) at particular set intervals, you have to follow a leader, etc.  Paganism, and especially witchcraft, is not like that, it’s not like that at all.  I keep trying to tell people, to explain to them, but I don’t think they understand.

Truth is, I don’t do a damn thing unless the urge hits me.  I might go for days, or weeks, or months without lifting one magickal finger to cast one crummy spell.  Then– Pow!– something comes up, something comes up that actually needs to be taken care of, there is a reason, there is a rhyme behind it.  Something comes up in life that needs my attention, so I take care of it with a spell, with a candle, with herbs, with a poppet, with other magickal twists and turns, whatever needs doing.

And that’s what I do.  There’s no law in my book that says I have to run around interneting people Happy this, or Blessed that– if I choose not to observe ‘traditional’ pagan holidays, that’s my choice, that’s my decision.  The sky isn’t going to fall, and  my magickal little soul will be just fine.

And that’s what I do…just exactly what I want to do.

This is the spirit of the witch…it wreaks of freedom.

Workplace Mojo– Bad Bosses Beware

Making Magick

Image may contain: fire and candles

As I sit here, right now, let’s put a spell together on a whim and a fancy, by the seat of our pants.  So often I’ve noticed, especially with people new to witchcraft, that we tend to rely on spells being laid out before us, all black and white, neatly listed, pre-packaged, and ready to go– kind of like fast food.  We shouldn’t be afraid to slap together a spell of our own making, our own unique creation.  Not only will it ‘feel’ good when you cast it, it will carry so much of your magickal energy and power of intention that it’s bound to cause a tremor through the universe.

Workplace Mojo

1) Intention…Let’s concentrate today on the workplace and the problems that we find there.  These ‘problems’ almost always tend to have two arms, two legs, and a great hole in their face called A Mouth.

2) Candle Color…If it’s The Mouth that’s causing problems, let’s go with a yellow candle– for the element of Air and communication.  If we just want this ‘problem’ to go away, as in banishing to other-worlds, or in this case other departments, let’s go with my favorite candle color– black.

3) “Dressing” the Candle…We’re going to do several things. First:  carve the name of your problem on this candle, and then sit quietly and hold it in your hands for few minutes, visualizing this individual, seeing in your mind what you want to happen, where you want this person to go, how you want the negative energy dispersed.

Put a bit of oil on your fingertips, either a magickal oil made for specific intentions, or a little olive oil from your kitchen cupboard, and smooth this oil over the candle.

Crush up or grind some herbs that are related to the energies that we’re dealing with and the intentions that we’re raising.  If you’re using a yellow candle to shut a big mouth, you’ll find that slippery elm and cloves work great for this, and I’ve discovered that dieffenbachia will also stop the flow of word vomit just as effectively.  As you grind or crush these herbs, you should chant a little chant and get yourself all worked up over this issue.  After all, if you’ve come to the point of casting magick spells to defend yourself against an individual, you’ve got a right to be pissed– so get pissed, and imbue these herbs and this candle with all that emotion and intentions.

Pour the prepared herbs in a nice line the length of your candle or in a pile on the table.  Lay your oiled candle on its side, and roll it in the herbs so that they adhere to the candle.

4)  Igniting the magick…Okay, you can set this candle up now and light it.  And while it’s burning, write down the name of the big fat old problem on a small slip of paper.  Set this paper on fire by the flame of your spell candle and drop it in a bowl, allowing it to burn to ash.

While you’re doing this, chant your little chant, get mad, stamp your feet, spit in the bowl, and just throw a good old hissy fit.  It will make you feel better, and it will direct the negative energy caused by this individual to come right back at them, full force.  It’s kind of like slapping them in the face, but you won’t leave a mark.

5)  Cleaning up…Once the candle is burned out, gather up the left-over wax, the ashes, and anything else from the makings of this spell and go bury it somewhere– but not on your own property.

Note:  If it’s the black candle you used and banishing was your intention, these would be among my favored herbs for this deed:  cloves; banishing powder– if you’ve got it;  anything ‘hot’– like cayenne pepper, black pepper; anything stinging– like nettles; anything sharp– like thorns, which you can stick right into the sides of your candle.

It would be nice if we didn’t have to waste our time and energy on this type of person and this kind of magick, but the real world dictates otherwise.  We can at least be thankful that there are measures we can take to defend ourselves and to make life bearable.

If you’re the victim of bad workplace behavior, go for it– more power to you!  If you are the perpetrator of bad work place behavior…beware.

Candle Magick

1

Magick…it’s as easy as striking a match and lighting a candle– it is, really. It’s called ‘candle magick’, and there is a rhyme and reason behind it.

(I know, this post might be boring for all the practicing witches out there who do this type of magic all the time, those who’ve done it for years, those who can do it blind-folded. But there are so many new witches on the horizon, so many emails and questions coming in, bear with me– and definitely feel free to leave your own advice in the comments below. Everyone has their own little way of doing things, everyone has discovered magickal little tweaks that work for them, there is a gazillion ways to do magick. Pass your information along.)

FirstIntention

What do you want? What are you trying to change? What’s your magickal intention?  You have to know; you have to be specific; you have to have thought this out, have it squared away in your head.   It has to be strong and definite in your mind, or you will not be able to successfully move the energy along to manifest this intention into the world.

SecondCandle Color

Once you definitely know what you want, what you’re trying to accomplish with this magick, you have to decide on what color of candle you’ll need.  This is important.  The color of the candle is associated with very definite images, intentions, magick; connected even to the elements (earth, air, fire, water); connected to the planets (astrological/magickal associations).  Everything is so connected it’s unreal; most people have no idea.

Red Candles

For the element of Fire, for the planet Mars– it’s all about hot sizzling passion, whether your intention is for physical passion with a prospective mate, or just that wild over-the-top passion for justice or a particular cause.  Red candles will create the kind of energy that moves things along like gang-busters.  Think of those phrases:  “too hot to handle”, “red-hot”, “I’m seeing red”; there’s a reason for these confirmations.

Green Candles

For the element of Earth– health and money, two basic necessities of life.  Face it, you won’t be living very well if you don’t have enough of either one.  The green candle for planet Earth– Mother Gaia, the embodiment of our world, a metaphor for the Mother Goddess, representative of our physical world (our bodies).  Just as people of other spiritual paths request healing and prosperity from their god(s), so the witch turns to divinity, but in her case, it’s not a request, as divinity is part of the witch and the witch is part of divinity.  It’s a different relati0nship within the metaphysical realm.

Yellow Candles

For the element of Air, for the planet Mercury– communication, creativity, mental endeavors. it’s all about pure thought, our mind, that intangible part of ourselves that make us who we are.  Those cliques that are coming to me right now: “thoughts move mountains”, “what we think is what we are”.  The mental aspect of us is the most powerful, some believing that it embodies our soul, our spirit, that which will survive eternally.  It’s also about communication– communication with other human beings, with divinity, with ourselves.  Use the yellow candle when you have something to say, something that needs to be heard.

Blue Candles

For the element of Water…light a blue candle to invoke the Goddess, to enhance your dreams and intuition.  Use the blue candle to come to terms with your emotions, for understanding, for resolution, for enhancement.  The blue candle for the heavenly body, the Moon:  pagan spirituality, the goddess (all three aspects), magick, blessings, running with the tide (waxing and waning– drawing in, sending away).  Use the blue candle for women’s issues, with the knowledge that you are tapping into something indescribably ancient and indescribably wise.

White Candles

You can use a white candle as a substitute for any other color.  But the white candle is also used particularly for cleansing and purification.  Use a white candle for House Blessings, or for cleansing any space.  Use a white candle for invoking and honoring divinity.  Use a white candle for pure energy.  Use a white candle for inspiration, for clarity, for peace.

Black Candles

The black candle, for the planet Saturn…use the energy of this candle to return-to-sender negative energy, bad thoughts, curses, ill-wishes sent your way.  Use the energy of the black candle for retribution and justice.  Use the black candle to catch the bad guy, to banish something (or someone) nasty.  Use the black candle to regain personal power taken from you through injustice.

3

The following information is a paragraph taken from my online book, “Natural Magick the Gray Witch Way”:

You can work with tea candles, votive candles, pillar candles, or hoodoo seven day candles.  You’ll allow these spell candles to burn themselves out at one sitting, or you’ll light them at appropriate times over the course of a period of time. You will save the wax from these candles to be used in mojo bags; you’ll bury it; throw it into running water; or toss it in the trash. You will prepare these candles to work their magick when you anoint (dress) these candles with a variety of magickal oils– or a little olive oil, if you don’t have a stock of magickal oils on hand.  You will use your athame, or another sharp object, to carve into the spell candle the name of your target, sigils and symbols relating to your intention, or designs of your own creation. You will roll these oiled candles in a variety of pulverized crushed herbs depending on your intentions and the desired outcome you wish for your magick.

KATZ

It’s said of cats that they can move magickally through time and space, visiting the Land of Fairy, where no human can safely travel.  It’s also said that cats can cross the boundaries of a magickal circle, a witch’s sacred space, without breaking the circle or disturbing the energy.  Cats are also very sensitive to spirits and other paranormal entities, so watch your cat carefully, it will tell you when something is lurking about.  We personally experienced this one day as my girls and I sat watching our calico cat mysteriously circle an invisible something in the middle of the living room floor.  She tightly circled around it, hair standing on end, cautiously reaching inward to sniff whatever it was, and jerking her head back, as though to stay out of its reach.  It suddenly startled her.  She jumped straight in the air, all four feet off the ground, and took off racing out of the living-room.  Had I not seen this with my own eyes, it would have been hard to believe.  I’m glad I had witnesses to this truly remarkable incident.

It is especially unlucky to harm a black cat, as this is a favorite form for spirits to take, and not every black cat you see is actually a cat– but a spirit in disguise.  Black cats have, over the centuries, suffered greatly because of their association with Witches and their reputation as Witches’ familiars.  In Italy, even today, thousands of black cats are slaughtered every year in the name of superstition.  It’s recommended to black cat owners here in the U.S. that they keep their felines indoors over Samhain (Halloween) night, as black cats are often targeted for abuse because of their connection to witches and this holiday.

Cats are independent, intelligent, not likely to suffer fools.  They may be loyal, but the recipient of that loyalty must be deserving of it.  Cats are agile, silent, cunning, excellent and vicious hunters, aloof, and sometimes lazy.

CatnipValerianRue

Catnip is commonly used in sleeping potions, and the herb is well-known for the intoxicating effect it has on cats.  Catnip is also sacred to all Pagan Gods/Goddesses who manifest in the form of a cat or other feline creature– this would include the Egyptian goddess, Bast; as well as the Norse goddess, Freya.

Correspondences:

Element:  Water; Planet:  Venus; Energy:  Feminine (receptive)
Used in animal magick and for healing pets, increases the psychic bond with animals. Use as a tea for happiness and relaxation. Can also be used during meditation, increases psychic abilities. Useful in love magick- try burning dried leaves for love wishes.

Valerian is used in sleeping potions and dream pillows.  It’s said that the scent of valerian is irresistible to cats and if they find it in your garden, they will dig it up.

Correspondences:

Element:  Water; Planet:  Venus; Energy:  Feminine (receptive)
Valerian is a muscle relaxant and tranquilizer. Use for dream magick and sleep protection baths. Keep in the home or grow in the garden to aid in keeping harmony. May be used to purify a ritual space. Useful in consecrating incense burners. Drink tea daily, in moderate doses, during times of purification.

Rue is used to keep cats away, whether from digging in your garden, or hunting the birds gathering around your feeders.  This would probably also work to keep them off your bed and the kitchen table.  Since I find my cats’ presence at both of these places enjoyable, I’ll forego the Rue at these spots.  Cats dislike the scent of Rue, which is purported to have been used in the middle-ages as a talisman of protection against witches and their familiars.

Correspondences:

Element:  Fire; Planet:  Mars; Energy:  Masculine (projective)
Use Rue in purification baths to break hexes or curses; use in exorcism incense; use the magick of Rue to return-to-sender any negative energy or negative magick sent your way.  *Odd Note:  it’s said that Rue works best when stolen and replanted in your garden, where it will– ironically– protect your home and grounds from thieves.

Cats are considered to be the animal that is the ally of gamblers and games of chance; they are believed to bring good luck and success in these endeavors.  Following are spells of luck, gambling, and goddess invocation, through cat magick:

Lucky Cat Spell

Candles in the shape of cats are the figure candles most associated with gambling magic.  Red, black or green candles may all be used.  Let your intuition guide you:

1.  Inscribe the candle with your name, identifying information, and any lucky numbers.

2.  Dress it with Black Cat Oil, or another gamblers lucky oil.

3.  Burn the candle.

Lucky Cat Candle Spell

Lucky cat candles help fulfill your wishes.  Color coordinate to suit the nature of the wish:  use green for money, red for love, and black to resolve problems.

1.  Carve and dress the candle as you will.

2.  Write your wish succinctly and explicitly on a piece of paper.

3.  Burn the paper; use this paper to light the candle, rather than a match.

4.  Murmur wishes, incantations, and sacred verses, at least until the paper has completely burned to ash.

Spirit Petition:  Freya Cat Spell

There is an old Norse tradition of paying tribute to the goddess Freya by feeding milk to cats.

1.  Put out milk for stray cats.  If you don’t live in an area with stray cats, bring contributions to a shelter or adopt a gray stray cat.

2.  Feeding isn’t done mundanely, by rote, but as a conscious offering; speak with Freya simultaneously, explain your needs, desires, or broken heart, and request assistance.

3.  Pay attention– the response may come through the cats

Just Saying

Magick & Witchcraft

1.  People get so upset about the fine line between ‘black’ magick and ‘white’ magick.  There really isn’t any line at all.  The intensity and direction of our magick depends upon our boundaries and how deeply we will allow someone to encroach upon our territory, our person, our life…when these boundaries are broached, that’s usually when magick begins to take on shades of gray…and in that case, it winds up being about protection and self-preservation.

2.  What kind of witch am I?…The ‘me’ that I normally am naturally slips into the witch that already exists.  If you are a normally bitchy person, you’re going to be one fine and mighty bitchy witch.  If you are a passive individual, so shall you be a passive witch.  The witch that you are is so wrapped up with the psyche that is ‘you’ that it is one and the same– indistinguishable from the rest of your humanity.

Writing

1.  The best writing that I’ve ever done is writing that I get lost in.

2.  Literature Classes…The most idiotic thing– this teacher in a Literature class in high school had us read some prose, and then she had us tell her how we interpreted it.  So I read it, and I told her.  I don’t remember today exactly what it was I read, but I do remember the intensity of feeling it created and the enthralling layers of personalities and possiblities that unfolded.

When I finished telling this teacher my breathless interpretation of this prose, she quietly and unceremoniously told me that I was wrong.

“Now”, she begins, “this is what it really means…”

I was stunned and crestfallen– had everything that I had experienced during my reading been false?

Moral:

Some people should never teach art or literature…those people who are trapped inside an invisible box they can’t see out; those people who are trapped in small minds and small lives; those people who can only justify their existence by feigned superiority; those people who insist that everyone must view the world through their eyes; those people who color all flowers red and all leaves green; those people who only see the sky as blue.

Age

1.  The older I get, the nearer the past seems.

2.  Life doesn’t slow down as you get older, it winds itself up tighter so that you have to run faster.

Poppets: Love ’em or Leave ’em; Cure ’em or Curse ’em

When you purchase poppets from my website, they are charged and ready to go– all that’s left is for you to add a ‘personal’ touch with a photo, a lock of hair, a signature, etc.  But did you know that there is a ritual to ‘breathe them to life’ ?  Well there is, and I’m passing one on to you which I wrote myself.  It would be preferable to work this magic within a cast circle.  If you aren’t a practiced occultist, know that this ritual is not a requirement– but I won’t tell you that it doesn’t make a difference, because it sure can.

ImageAssemble those items that correspond to the four elements– a bowl of water, a lit candle, an incense of your choice, and a bowl of salt.

1.  Cast your circle & call the quarters.

2.  Have your altar prepared, the color of your altar cloth, the herbs and stones present all corresponding to your intentions.

3.  Upon this altar place the items belonging to the elements.

4.  Take a few moments to ground yourself, to gather your energy, to fill your mind and this magical space with your intentions for this poppet.

5.  Lay the doll upon the altar.

For the element of Earth:

Take a handful of salt and sprinkle it across the figure, saying:

“I infuse you with Earth, that you feel physical touch.”

For the element of Air:

Take the doll in your hands and hold it in the smoke of the incense, turning it, moving it, that it is consumed with the smoke, saying:

“I infuse you with Air, that you think.”

For the element of Fire:

Lay the doll upon the altar once more and hold the burning candle above it, saying:

“I infuse you with Fire, that your passion be unquenchable and you feel the heat of my fury (or love, hate, etc.)”

For the element of Water:

Dip your right hand into the bowl of water and sprinkle the water upon the poppet as it lay on your altar, saying:

“I infuse you with Water, that your emotions be overwhelming.”

6.  Leave the poppet lay on the altar.  Take a deep breath and slowly lean over it, until you hover above it’s mouth, your own lips almost touching it.  Exhale now, allow your breath to escape from your body in one long warm draught of air.  And this breath shall enter the poppet and give it life.

7.  Open your circle, dismiss the quarters.  Do with the poppet what you must, according to your intentions.

Court Case Mojo

The one time in your life, when you will be relieved of any control over what happens to you, what happens to a loved one, what happens to a victim, or what happens to a perpetrator, will be in a court room.  The one time when fate and destiny will definitely lay in the hands of a single individual (a judge), or a group of individuals (a jury), will be in the court room.  In a world of perfection, justice would prevail in these episodes 100% of the time; but we don’t live in a perfect world, and once in a while, this system– created by men, flawed by humanity, fails.  And when it fails, it usually fails in a big way, an irreversible way, an in-your-face-I’m-gonna-wreck-your-life way.  But we don’t have to close our eyes and wait for the consequences of this system to strike us in a helter-skelter totally unpredictable whimsical fashion.  We can take control of destiny, of fate, of our own circumstances, or those of a loved one, through very old, very powerful, very successful mojo…Court Case Mojo.

Herbs:  The herbs most likely used for court case magick include: calendula, cascara sagrada, deer’s tongue, dill, little John the conquer root, black mustard seed, poppy, shame brier, sumac, sugar, tobacco, slippery elm, cayenne pepper, cloves, belladonna.  For really vile cases, the most poisonous, disgusting, prickly, thorny types of herbs and substances you can think of is what you should be using.  (I’m sure there’s more than I’ve listed here, but this is a good start.)

Personal concerns:  hair, finger-nail clippings, saliva, bodily fluids/secretions, blood.  Items such as a piece of jewelry, a button from clothing, under-garments, a used Kleenex or handkerchief, a spoon, a shoe, dirt from a footprint; anything the target has touched, put in his/her mouth, an image (photograph), a signature, a hoodoo poppet, a doll (as in the Barbie doll types, with the correct hair color, dressed and named as the target) etc.

The methods:

The first method is one of my favorites and one of the most effective.  This type of spell-casting is not for the squeamish, or anyone who’s heart is not into what they’re doing 100%.  You can have no doubt that you are in the right and the target (damn them) are in the wrong.  You know when it’s right.  You can feel it, you can smell it.  The air around you will be charged with energy, with entities (spirits), it will almost unexplainably propel you along.  I don’t know how else to explain it, but when you’re called upon to cast this kind of mojo, you will know…

Hexing Poppets

These are the poppets that make the White Witches squirm; the poppets that people find the most intriguing and sometimes frightening; the poppets that wreak of mystery, foreboding, power, retribution, and revenge. In some circles, you might find controversy and arguments where use of the black hexing poppet is concerned, but you won’t find it here.

This poppet is considered one of the ‘big guns’. When someone in your life is making circumstances impossible, when someone is wreaking havoc in people’s lives, when someone is being just plain mean and nasty above and beyond what’s acceptable– it’s time for a magickal kick in the pants.

Beef Tongue Court Case Spell

This quaint little spell is steeped in hoodoo tradition, and if you are squeamish, it could be a bit of a challenge.  I have actually had the pleasure of using this delightful twisted magical gun when I was going through the legal proceedings of a nasty divorce and had reached the point where I’d had enough.  Of course, right in the midst of the best part of the spell, our neighbor lady knocked on the backdoor.  My girls practically bowled her over to keep her out of the house so I could finish the job.  This spell will work for you, I can tell you this from personal experience, so stick with it and see it through– make the gray witch proud.

Items needed:

1.  A raw beef tongue (You should be able to find this in the meat department of your local grocery store.)
2.  Several slips of paper and a pen
3.  Pins and needle and thread
4.  A strip of red flannel cloth large enough to wrap up the tongue
5.  Cayenne pepper
6.  Four Thieves Vinegar

Make sure you have a decent place to work where you’ll have plenty of room to spread things out and get comfortable, this may take a while.

1.  Begin by writing the names of the judge, the attorneys, adversaries, witnesses, anyone connected to your case who may have a negative impact or influence upon it or you on these small slips of paper– one name per slip!
2. Using a sharp knife, cut small slits into the beef tongue– a slit for each slip of paper.
3.  Insert one name paper into each slit.
4.  Sprinkle the tongue with cayenne pepper and Four Thieves Vinegar.
5.  Close the slits in the tongue with straight pins, or do what I did– sew the slits shut with needle and thread.
6.  Wrap the tongue in red flannel and place it in your freezer while the court case is in progress.  When you’ve reached the end of this ordeal and all is said and done, remove the tongue from your freezer and bury it in the earth.

For anyone reading this who is especially sensitive to the darker energies and may have gotten a case of the heebie-jeebies as they’ve read their way through this blog post, don’t worry, you’ll be fine, believe me.  You might feel better if you’d 1) light a white candle, 2) choose a nice incense– like sandalwood or nagchampa, and light it up, and 3) sit a few small bowls of salt out about your house, or sprinkle (asperge) your space with salted water.  It’s okay– strong energy usually leaves an impression…that’s the point.

The New Moon

New Moon:

The night of the dark moon represents a time to cast spells that will reveal secrets, a time to cast spells that will perpetuate beginnings.  The time of the dark moon is also excellent for divination.  Although some witches view this phase of the moon as a time to refrain from magic, the gray witch knows that now is the time to step into the shadows and grab the powerful energy found there.

 September
Wine Moon

Herbs:  lilac, mugwort, marjoram, rose, thyme

Stones:  sapphire, bloodstone, rainbow obsidian

Scents:  gardenia, rose, lilac

Colors:  brown, yellow-green, amber

Trees:  hazel, larch, bay

Deities:  Demeter, Ceres, Isis,

Astrological Signs:  Virgo, Libra

Elements:  Earth/Air

Crafting Your Magic: Feminine energy is highlighted, receptive energy.  Cast magic to draw inward, magic to draw those things– both intangible and material– to you that you need to fill the void.  The Goddess is in the spotlight.  Work magic to benefit female issues, such as fertility, independence, and protection.

The Wine Moon works its magic in the area of love and relationships.  Cast spells to discover your soul mate, find a lost love, or nurture a secret desire.  The energy of Libra will bring balance to all magic cast at this time, and its energy promotes the very essence of love and sex.  Cast spells now to promote healthy sexuality and to maintain or regain physical health of the reproductive system.

Concentrate on the third eye chakra, opening the doors to psychic experiences.  Prepare to enter the autumnal dark months with the clairvoyant vision to see well beyond, into the light of the future.

Samhain
October 31
Samhain (pronounced ‘Sou-wen’) is a celebration that has a more somber side than the revelry of modern Halloween. It is a day of remembrance of your ancestors and for those family members who have passed over.
Pagan families may set an extra place at the supper table on this evening, to honor those loved ones who are no longer with them. The veil between the world of the living and the dead is thinnest on this eve, and this night is an excellent time to perform divination, or try to connect with those from the other side.
Herbs: patchouli, sage, heather
Altar Flowers/Herbs: acorns, apples, pumpkins/gourds, dittany, autumn leaves
Feast Foods: pumpkin, squash, nut breads, sweet potatoes, milled drinks (cider, wine), roast meat, root vegetables
Animals: bats, cats, crows, ravens, owls
Incense: cinnamon, cloves, myrrh, patchouli, pine, mugwort, nutmeg
Rituals/Spells:  making besoms, divination, spirit contact, crone magick, working with dark energy, spells for new beginnings

Crafting Your Magic
Ancestral magic is cast with the Blood Moon. Do magic now to communicate with family members who have passed, to connect with your ancestors and your heritage. Magic surrounding divination is relevant, it’s the perfect time. Cast spells for justice and balance, and to overthrow anything oppressive which may be blocking your path to success. Ambition is highlighted, use magic to increase the potency of your own, or cast magic to contain ambition that may have run amok. This is also the perfect time to step into the dark shadows and take advantage of the vibrations found there. The gray witch revels in the magic of the Blood Moon and in this season.

Magickal Herbs

HERBALPICTURES.jpg picture by witch_of_endore

In the tradition of Samhain, we’re going to look at herbs used to call up spirits.

Mugwort
To bring forth protective & benevolent spirits, Mugwort is burned on charcoal with star anise, althea, and resin incenses like frankincense, myrrh, copal, or benzoin.
Energy: feminine/receptive
Planet: Venus
Element: Earth
Powers: strength, psychic powers, protection, prophetic dreams, healing, astral projection

 Dandelion
The root, when dried, roasted, and ground like coffee, is used to make a tea. This infusion will promote psychic powers. This same tea, steaming and placed beside the bed, will call spirits.
Energy: masculine/projective
Planet: Jupiter
Element: Air
Powers: divination, wishes, calling spirits

 Thistle
To call Spirits, place some thistle in boiling water. Remove from heat and lie or sit beside it. As the steam rises call the spirits and listen carefully; they may answer your questions.
Energy: masculine/projective
Planet: Mars
Element: Fire
Powers: strength, protection, healing, exorcism, hex-breaking

Wormwood
Wormwood is burned to summon spirits. It is sometimes mixed with sandalwood for this purpose. If burned in graveyards the spirits of the dead will rise and speak, according to old grimoires.
Energy: masculine/projective
Planet: Mars
Element: Fire
Powers: psychic powers, protection, love, calling spirits

Sweetgrass
Burn sweetgrass to attract good spirits, or beings, before performing spells.
(Strangely enough, I couldn’t find any correspondences listed for sweetgrass, other than it’s power to call in spirits.)

Disclaimer: Never ingest any herbs, or feed them to someone else,
if you are not absolutely sure they are safe!

Kitchen Wytchery

As the Kitchen Witch knows, natural magick can be found in certain foods, recipes, as well as herbs. In this section we’re going to put this knowledge to work.
Witches-Kitchenbymagic_art.jpg icon kitchen witch picture by witch_of_endore
We celebrate Samhain at our house big time. I’m going to include in this newsletter my own recipe for pumpkin pie & my ‘secret’ recipe for the large pot of hot apple cider that is a tradition at our house. The photos included are family photos of Samhains past.
My Pumpkin Pie:
1 16 oz. can pumpkin (about 2 cups)
1 13 oz. can evaporated milk (but sometimes I use sweetened condensed milk– it makes it more ‘chiffony’…is that a word?)
2 eggs 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 sugar
the spices:
Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, and a dash of salt. Most recipes call for 1/2 teaspoon each, but I’m much more generous with my spices!
the crust:
I tried for years to learn to make a good pie crust, and I almost gave up out of frustration– then I found this recipe. It’s almost foolproof, no kidding.
2 and 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup shortening 1 beaten egg 1 tablespoon vinegar 1/4 cup water
Mix the dry ingredients together and cut in the shortening, as usual. Then combine the egg and vinegar, stirring it up a bit, and add this to your dry ingredients. Add the water a dash at a time as you work it in, you’ll be able to tell when you get a good texture.
Edit:  I bake this pie at 425 degrees for the first 15 minutes; then I turn the oven down to 400 degrees for the next 30-45 minutes, until it’s cooked enough to thicken the filling. I check this by sticking a clean butter knife in the center– when the knife comes out “clean”, I know the pie is done.

Hot Apple Cider
I have a *Huge*– did I say huge?– kettle that I use to mix up my cider. This sits and simmers all afternoon on the backburner of my stove, wafting a wonderful aroma throughout the house.
Ingredients:
5-7 large jugs of applejuice 8-10 bags of peach tea a handful of cinnamon sticks and a large metal tea ball filled with whole cloves and allspice.
You can leave a shaker of nutmeg sit on the counter & anyone who wants to add a dash of this spice to their mug of apple cider can do so.  If you don’t like this cider full force, you can dilute it some with water to suit your own taste.

Our kitchen isn’t as organized as Rachel Ray’s or Martha Stewart’s, but we get the job done. Above are kettles of cider brewing in preparation for a Samhain evening.

Let’s take a look at the ingredients we just used from a magickal perspective:
Peaches— love
Nutmeg— one of the most popular uses for nutmeg is to assure fidelity. It’s also used for spells centered around luck, money, and health.
Cinnamon— spirituality, success, healing, power, psychic powers, lust, protection, love
 Allspice— money, luck, healing
 Cloves— protection, exorcism, love, money
Apple— love, healing, garden magic, immortality
Happy Samhain!!
