Choosing & Cleansing Your Crystals

(The photo above is a small sample of my own stones.
A few of them were gifted to me and the rest I chose and purchased myself.)

How do you choose your own crystals and stones?

I don’t think there are any hard and fast rules for this.  It has to do with the type of stone you need for the intended purpose, of course.  But it also has to do with the depth of color, the shape, patterns that may be found upon it, and most importantly of all– the ‘feel’.

I don’t believe anyone can choose a stone for someone else, not even in a piece of jewelry.  You have to choose it yourself, or rather, it chooses you.  And yes, I do believe there is a great deal of truth to that statement.  I’ve been looking over stones in a shop before, and I’ve had one catch my eye.  Even though I continue sorting through a whole handful of the same type of stone, that particular one will keep drawing my attention back to it.

Don’t be afraid to dive in, hold the stones in your hands, rub them between your fingers, turn them over in your palm and really look at them, listen to them, feel them– feel them beyond just their physical presence, pay attention to the energy they are emitting.

Take your time, don’t let anyone rush you, and don’t let anyone talk you into purchasing a stone you don’t feel drawn to.  You also want to make sure that the dealer you’re buying them from is offering the stones at a fair price.  Some merchants tend to get a little slap happy when tacking a value on their wares.  Stop at more than one shop and compare prices– this also applies if you are purchasing your stones off the internet.

Now you’ve purchased your lovely handful of gemstones and taken them home with you– It’s time to cleanse them, to wash away all the accumulated energy they’ve picked up sitting around the shop, being handled by merchants and customers, passed from hand to hand.

How do you cleanse your crystals and stones?

The easist way, and the way I prefer myself, is to hold them under running water.  There is nothing more absolutely cleansing, clarifying, and rejuvenating than the magick of water.  Period.  I ‘know’ my stones and crystals are truly cleansed after doing this; I can feel the difference.  If you feel a heaviness to any of your stones–as in energy, or they have been used for some particularly heavy duty rituals or healing, this is the best method and the most complete method of cleansing.

Another way to cleanse your stones, and  a way I’ve used myself when I’m in a rush, is to hold them in incense smoke.  This is fast, easy, and it does the trick for light cleansing.  Though I still advise, if your stones are particularly heavy with negative energy, use the first method.

You can also leave them lay in moonlight overnight, or you can fill a bowl with salt and cover them for a period of time determined by you, till they feel ‘clean’.  You can even immerse them in a bowl of water to which a pinch of salt has been added– but be cautious about this method if your stones are polished and finished, because the salt water will ruin the finish on your shiny stone.

(My lilac kunzite crystal…purchased at Next Millennium in Omaha, Nebraska.  Charlie has a wide assortment of gemstones and crystals to choose from, and I’ve purchased many a stone from this shop.  You can also purchase items online.)

The Witch’s Diary: Gypsy’s Magick Spell/7 Card Reading

(Follow this YouTube link to “The Witch’s Diary”, where I’ve recorded a 12 minute video while setting up to do this online reading):
http://youtu.be/6reiXr9pLCA

1/This is you:
The Wheel of Fortune

First impression:  Jupiter (expansion, money issues, business issues, growth– an interest in, or an active participation in, business activities).  The idea of three aspects to some area of your life (the triple goddess; three times ’round (3 marriages, serious relationships, etc.); three choices; three victories/three failures; three days/months/weeks until an important event–if you actually have something specific coming up in one of these time frames, and there is a decision involved, know that it’s going to turn out in your favor.

As I’ve said, you must tend to be lucky in games of chance, or life in general.  Lady Luck tends to sit on your shoulder, don’t brush her off– this can be done by any number of ways; with some people it just amounts to poor choices, with others it’s a matter of not listening to that little voice in their head.

2/ This is your defense:
The Devil

First impression:  “The devil made me do it.” (remember the black comedian whose tagline this was?)  There comes the idea of not taking the blame for something that may not be working out.  If there are any negative issues standing around in the limelight when this card pops up, the situations (and the results) are pretty much self-inflicted.

Someone may be asking for help; seeking advice; reaching for a life-line; trying to get your attention (unless it’s you trying to get someone else’s attention).  The snake (a totem animal):  wisdom, kundalini energy, the goddess, temptation, a connection with the earth (in a spiritual sense, as Gaia).  Again, there is the idea that three individuals are involved here– like two to one, but it’s a little hazy (possibly three women, or two women & one man).  The element of Earth– emphasis on the physcial aspect of life, the material things, those things of the body– pay close attention to health issues, Dr. appointments, scheduled physicals, etc.

3/ This is what you are afraid of:
Five-Cups

First impression:  You’re afraid of losing someone, or you have already experienced this, and you don’t want to go through it again.  Really!?…the idea of “3” comes once more with this card, as in three losses; the saying, “Three times the pain”; “Bad things come in threes”; but also, “There’s light at the end of the tunnel”; “Time heals all wounds”.

We all fear losing someone we love, but when this card comes up for an individual in a reading, it touches home in a more direct and intimate way, either through a previous experience, a touch of dejavu, or a future event.  I’m also under the impression that you are “trying to swim upstream”; “going against the current”; maybe you are “fighting a losing battle”…which would mean it’s time to regroup and consider a different strategy, a different way of looking at something.  As the saying goes, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

4/ This is what drives you:
Queen-Wands

First impression:  There’s a woman behind you, and a strong woman she is.  She may very well hold the ‘key’, the answer to your question, the solution to your situation; you only have but to trust her and confide in her.

This woman is holding something, something which may give her power and energy; hopefully this isn’t something she is holding ‘against’ you, but rather, something that is totally coming off of her, something defining in her personality, her life-decisions, her morals, her strength.  The idea of the auroboris (the snake circled around, holding its own tail in its mouth– a symbol of eternity).  The element of Fire:  passion; justice; survival; equality; fair play extremely strong emotions– whatever they might be, including love, lust, anger.  I just want to add that when this Queen is in your corner, her loyalty is flawless, and she will protect you to the end.  If this Queen is your enemy, she is one of the most vicious and vindictive you can imagine.

Also– if you need ‘fighting energy’ for anything in your life right now, it’s this Queen’s energy, this card, that implies it’s at your fingertips.

5/This is what you are left with:
Four-Cups

First impression:  You are not happy with the way something turned out; you’re avoiding an issue; you’re being stubborn, you may be turning down an offer you should accept– or you may even be totally unaware of it.

This card often implies that you are tired;  you’re tired of having to think about something; you’re tired from trying to solve something; you’re over-worked; you need a break; you don’t want to pay attention anymore.  You’re waiting for something.  Also coming to mind, the saying, “My plate is full”…and believe it or not, here comes the “3” again– this is really starting to intrigue/puzzle me.  There must be some incredibly meaningful universe-centered reason that this number is coming up– even if it’s not glaringly apparent to me, it might be to you, whose life it is impacting.

6/This is what the future will bring:
Eight-Swords ®

First impression:  A release; freedom.  With this first impression comes the idea that at the moment you may feel trapped, or uncertain of how to proceed, unsure of what path you wish to take.  You also may feel like your hands are tied and you  are helpless to make necessary changes.

Sunrise, and the idea of future events ahead; sunset, and the idea of completion, coming to the end of something.  Help…the figure on this card is imploring and trapped, confined and restrained.  Bottom line here, and it’s positive (really), is that this period is coming to a conclusion.  Freedom, release, and the idea of seeing your future clearly, is right around the corner.

7/This is what brings you back down to earth:
Four-Pentacles ®

First impression:  a tremendously grounded individual, though things might be a bit up in the air at the moment.  You like things stable, consistent, sound and granite-like.  Someone who likes to be in control, on top of issues– and again, things around you may not be this way, or at least they may not feel this way to you right now.  Never mind, though, you generally land on your feet.

Money issues; and this issue is such a huge deal that in most people’s lives it can be a dominating factor.  (Making a living, for those of us who are ordinary individuals, is no joke.)  The idea of “Getting a grip”; “Hanging on for the ride”; “Buckling down”, all come to mind.  Checkerboard– black and white issues (where are the shades of gray?); thinking with your heart instead of your head.

Magickal Herbs: Myrrh, Sandalwood, Carnation

HERBALPICTURES.jpg picture by witch_of_endore

The following herbs share the energy and power to heal.

Although these herbs have healing powers in common, they also contain individual energies, which can be used in a variety of spells.

  Myrrh

Energy:  Receptive (Feminine)

Planet:  Moon

Element:  Water

Deities:  Isis, Adonis, Ra, Marian

Powers:  Protection, Exorcism, healing, Spirituality

Ritual Uses:  Myrrh was burned to Ra at noon in ancient Egypt, and was also fumed in the temples of Isis.

Magical Uses:

Burned as an incense myrrh purifies the area, lifts the vibrations and creates peace.  However, it is rarely burned alone; usually in conjunction with frankincense or other resins.  Myrrh increases the power of any incense to which it is added.

Myrrh is also included in healing incenses and sachets, and its smoke is used to consecrate, purify, and bless objects such as amulets, talismans, charms, and magical tools.  Myrrh also aids meditation and contemplation.   It is often added to sachets, usually with frankincense.

mortarandpestle2.jpg picture by Amythyst1

  Sandalwood

Gender:  Receptive (Feminine)

Planet:  Moon

Element:  Water

Powers:  Protection, wishes, healing, exorcism, spirituality

Magical Uses:

Sandalwood powder is burned during protection, healing, and exorcism spells.  When mixed with lavender it makes an incense designed to conjure spirits.

This fragrant wood possesses very high spiritual vibrations and is burned at séances and Full Moon rituals when mixed with frankincense.  Write your wish on a chip of sandalwood and burn in the censer or cauldron.  As it burns it sets the magic flowing, but remember to visualize your wish at the same time.

Sandalwood beads are protective and promote a spiritual awareness when worn.

Powdered sandalwood can be scattered about a place to clear it of negativity, and is also used as an incense base.

  mortarandpestle2.jpg picture by Amythyst1

 Carnation

Gender:  Projective (Masculine)

Planet:  Sun

Element:  Fire

Deity:  Jupiter

Powers:  Protection, strength, healing

Magical Uses:

Worn during Elizabethan times to prevent coming to an untimely death on the scaffold, carnations can be used in all-purpose protective spells.

Carnations are placed in convalescent rooms to give the healing patient strength and energy, and are also used in healing spells.  Place fresh carnations (red are best) on the altar during healing rituals and add the dried blossoms to sachets and incense for the same purpose.

The Garden Boutique

I went solo this past Saturday and sat up a yardsale which I dubbed, The Garden Boutique. I’ve done this several times with a good friend, setting up tables filled with metaphysical supplies to delight the stoutest pagan: pendulums, magickal oils and potions, spell candles, kits and bags filled with supplies to bless a home or to cast a spell, as well as enchanted jewelry, arts & crafts, and other unique creations that defy description. This time I had only my girls to help watch tables and merchandise while I gave tarot readings and balanced chakras. It was a bit of a juggle sometimes, but we managed.

We live in a rather ‘out-of-the-way’ location, and I’m never sure how our turnout will be at these events, since we’re a bit difficult for some people to find. But contrary to my expectations, we had a great day which included an afternoon rush and a few return visitors. And the girls and I noticed that this time we were not hounded by Christians trying to convince us that we were headed down an evil path. Our customers were politely curious, inquisitive, and some even eager to learn, asking questions and getting up close and personal with the poppets and pendulums.

I was up at 5am, just as I had planned, and was out in the garage digging out tables, shelves, and chairs. However, when I actually started getting things arranged I realized– wait a minute, it’s too dark. And it sure was, pitch dark. Even with the garage lights on, it was too dark to stock the shelves. With daylight came some soft showers with cool refreshing temperatures. Since there was no wind at this time, I dodged the rain by placing all the tables and merchandise beneath the overhang on our house.

This is a family endeavor and everyone likes to create something to add to the inventory. My eleven-year-old daughter spent the day before the sale making bags with fabric paint, glue, and glitter. Several days ago, she had spent just as much time painting large clear stones to create pretty magnets. It was fun watching her during the creative process, head bent low over her work, quiet and intent.

My 24-year-old daughter is the ‘Isabella’ in “Creations by Isabella”. She’s a graphic artist, tattoo artist, and talented jewelry maker. She added some of her creations to our Garden Boutique. I’m very excited for her and her atistic career– She will be selling her designs for stamps and scrapbooking paper to a national company. As soon as I’m allowed to post more information, I will.

I stocked the table and shelves with a variety of items from my website, The Witch’s Corner. Setting up these boutique yardsales is actually a lot of fun, no matter how many trips in and out, up and down the stairs it takes. (Tearing it all down is another matter!)

I usually try to have a few copies of my book on hand, along with plenty of business cards, and it’s always fun to watch people explore this table. It’s a satisfying feeling to send someone on their way with a copy of my book in their hand.

Tarot: A Witch’s Journey

We have a covered back porch with a partial west wall, an east wall of bamboo blinds, and our south yard is blocked by the trees, so this is a pretty private area, and this is where I sat up my massage table and a powerful crystal grid to do Chakra Balancing. It was perfect. I had a water fountain running back here. It was peaceful, protected, and inviting.

The opposite end of the back porch was reserved for tarot readings…I just had to shoo sleeping kitties away!

I always have a small table set up for my CD player and some favorite new-age music. And I always have a small notepad and pen available. Customers are invited to add a prayer request or wish to the bowl. We have a little tradition at the end of our boutique yardsales– after everything is put away, I’ll bring out my big black cauldron, and we’ll burn these requests in a sacred flame.

This is the perfect way to end the day.

Blessed Be,
Amythyst Raine

New-Age Boutique Yardsale/June 2011

Twice a year we have a unique yardsale boutique which includes arts and crafts,  new-age metaphysical items, tarot readings, and chakra balancing.  This year our sale was held at a coven sister’s home, where we enjoyed the atmosphere of a Magickal Woods.

Below you’ll find still photos and commentary on our unique yardsale, and at the end of this post, you’ll find live video, which includes a tour through the Magickal Woods and a visit from one of our more colorful clientele:  “Nancy Flatbush”.

This year our vendors included:

“A Touch of Country” by Jamie Clarke

“Wood Carvings” by Ron Clarke

Stones, Pendulums, Jewelry, & Spell Bags by Mare Ryder

Mare also balanced Chakras, and this was wildly popular.  She was kept busy throughout the day providing this service:

Merchandise from The Witch’s Corner
(Tarot Readings are also one of the services offered at these events.)

We have a unique clientele and interesting individuals are always showing up at our yardsales.  This year, however, we were surprised and entertained by the appearance of  “Nancy Flatbush”.  We have a feeling that Ms. Flatbush is going to have to make future appearances at our yardsales.

The Triple Goddess

The Maiden

The maiden is overflowing with all of the possibilities of the future. Within her are the seeds of what will be. She is the fresh dawn of a new day. She is strength and tenacity and power. She is unbridled enthusiasm and wonder and hope.

The Mother

The mother is ripe fruit hanging pregnant from the vine. She is the foundation, the nurturer, the protectress. She is fortified with strength and placid with the calmness of a sunny day. She is who we turn to for stability and reassurance.

The Crone

It is the crone we seek in the darkening twilight. We find comfort in her quiet presence and yet we are challenged by her intuitive knowledge and aware of the darkshadows she casts…forcing us to seek the light and answers.

Divination

Photobucket

Divination brings to mind the stereotype of the gypsy woman ensconced in her tent, peering intently into her crystal ball—and that may very well be an accurate picture somewhere in the world. I grew up in my grandmother’s house, surrounded by books on astrology, numerology, handwriting analysis, dream interpretation, etc. The world of divination is a natural one for me.

But divination in this modern time of neo-paganism has come a long way baby.

Tarot cards of all kinds abound and fill the shelves at not only new-age and metaphysical shops, but also at the mainstream bookstores such as Borders, Barnes & Noble, Hastings, etc.

Crystals, crystal balls, runes, quija boards are as popular now as they were in times past—more so, perhaps. I like to think of this day and age as the “New Renaissance” for the occult world.

Spells & Potions

Photobucket

This is the “meat” of witchcraft, the most fascinating (and sometimes fear inducing) aspect of The Craft for many people. To most of the mundane world the idea that anyone would have the power and the ability to create change using occult means is awe inspiring and often intimidating. The Christian influence in our culture and on our society has taken such natural power away from the multitudes, deeming it “evil”, “sinful”, and even dangerous.

To those of us practiced and gifted in the use of “the black arts”, it carries none of those negative labels. It is awe inspiring, but in an uplifting and promising way. It empowers those who cultivate its secrets and those who learn to use it wisely. It opens doors of dimensions undreamed of; it embraces the forces of nature in all her glory; it wreaks of a time before recorded history…it calls to those of us with the spirit of the Olde Ones, those of us who wish to practice the Olde Religion, those of us who wish to return to these ancient times and reclaim that which is our birthright.

Herbs

Photobucket

This is the magickal medicine cabinet of the witch, and especially the Green Witch. Those who practice the olde ways have known since time immemorial of the powers contained in the molecules of “the green”. Herbs have been used since ancient times—and still are used today—for their medicinal and healing powers. But the Witch knows that these gentle and lovely plants contain other powers as well…magickal powers to be used and tapped into for spells and potions and rituals and cleansing.

The Elements

(Earth, Air, Fire, Water)

Photobucket

FOR ME: Water is the mist of yesterday and today and tomorrow all wrapped up into one magical moment. Water is dreams and visions and questing endlessly to know the unknown. It is divination– searching for answers and listening to the universe for its response. It is the mystical and the elusive…it slips through your fingers leaving you wet and cold and shivering, knowing that you have been touched by the Divine.

FOR ME: Air is the soft breeze on your face that makes you feel touched and not touched. It is thought brought alive and moved through space and time by the Divine. Air is the part of your mind that is clear and sharp and focused and ever changing, never still and never content, but always swept up within another breeze and moved along on the current of time.

FOR ME: Earth is all the treasures buried deep within the soul. It is the material things you long for and were told you shouldn’t have. It is the security of that which is solid and immovable, and it is “manifestation” into the real world of touch and taste and smell and sight.

FOR ME: Fire is that physical passion so burning that it can consume. It is enthusiasm so powerful that it is what drives you to succeed. Fire is that fiery will that doesn’t allow you to give up in the face of adversity. It is what draws lovers together across insurmountable odds and provokes the passion that fights endlessly for justice.

Earth, Air, Fire, and Water…the four elements from which we can draw power to create magick.

Wheel of the Year

(Pagan Holidays)

Photobucket

The Christian “holidays” all have Pagan roots. This is a fact that was constantly brought up to me years ago by a lady who was my friend and a Jehovah’s Witness. It was her oft repeated reason to me why she didn’t celebrate any of the modern Christianized holidays now.

I am surprised by the number of people who do not know this, and even more surprised at how many refuse to believe it. It just goes to show how completely saturating cultural training can be.

I find the history of our Pagan holidays fascinating and joyful and uplifting. I and my family embrace and celebrate them.

Chakras

Photobucket

The word chakra is Sanskrit for wheel or disk and signifies one of seven basic energy centers in the body. Each of these centers correlates to major nerve ganglia branching forth from the spinal column. In addition the chakras also correlate to levels of consciousness, archetypal elements, developmental stages of life, colors, sounds, body functions, and much, much more.

This definition of chakras is taken from:

Rituals

Photobucket

Rituals put a stamp on the passage of time and the progression of our life stages, from a Wiccaning (baby naming) to a death and remembrance ritual, and all those celebrations and milestones in-between. Rituals validate our existence in some implausible elusive way. They bring family and friends together, open doors to the future, and create memories for generations to come.

Ghosts/Ghost Hunting

Photobucket

Growing up in my grandmother’s house prepared me for the paranormal occurrences that I would experience in this, my own house. My grandmother’s house was very active and anyone with an ounce of sensitivity to such things was always very aware of it…the feeling of being “watched” when no one else was near you, the hair suddenly standing up on the back of your neck and the sensation that “someone” was standing behind you, unintelligible whisperings in the dark of the night, a blanket being pulled from you by something you couldn’t see, lights going off and on with no explanation—and stove burners doing the same unnerving thing, objects occasionally moving, etc.

Growing up with these occurrences, I thought it was natural—wasn’t everyone’s house like this?

Apparently not, I was to learn as I became older. That enlightenment helped me to appreciate, study, and cope with paranormal activities on a very basic level. It also taught me to conquer any fear.

But witchcraft taught me how to tame these ethereal spirits, how to control them instead of allowing them to control me. Witchcraft taught me it was possible to have dominion over the spirit world.

My Path

Photobucket

I am a solitary eclectic witch. My path consists of hoodoo, Wicca, and green witchcraft. I am neither a “white” nor a “black” witch; I prefer to see myself in shades of gray— nothing else on this earth is completely clear cut, the practice of The Craft isn’t either.

I am a hereditary witch, taking after the traditions of my mother, my sister, and cousins. I am now watching my own daughters grow in this path. I was raised by my grandmother, a woman steeped in the study of the occult, yet probably not realizing the title many in this world would have attributed to her.

I am a legally ordained member of the clergy, yet I avoid the usual titles which smack too closely of Christianity for my taste. I prefer the simple, yet deeply meaningful title of “Lady”.

Photogallery

I’ve opened a window on this page, a window into my private world.  I have tried to post images on here that I haven’t posted anywhere else, they are exclusive.  I haven’t decided yet whether to continue the Photogallery or relegate it to an archive, but my camera is always ready, and life somehow or other always has something interesting to show me.
